Steph M
http://guardianlv.com/2014/02/single-injection-dog-sterilization-zeuterin-available-starting-monday/ Interesting idea, particularly as it doesn't remove testosterone all together. I wonder if its better than Suprelorin?
aliwake
Wow! Definitely a gamechanger. I thought the coolest part was this: The company was founded by an ordained minister in order to honor his commitment to making a difference in the world and is a mission-based private company. That explains how they can make it so affordable... Edited February 19, 2014 by aliwake
OSoSwift
I have heard about this on another forum I go on. The vet we have on there is not a fan and apparently it is rather painfull for the dogs. I do see where it has it's place - street, camp populations etc. I will watch with interest Edited February 19, 2014 by OSoSwift
sandgrubber
A useful tool, but not a panacea. They're going to have to figure out some way to mark dogs who have been done for it to work with strays, lest they repeatedly do the same dogs; and they're going to have to be sure to get all the boys. One good escape artist can impregnate a lot of bitches.
Steph M
Perhaps ear tagging or microchips could work? Not failsafe but a good start?
OSoSwift
I would imagine chipping would be the way to go. I can see it would be useful in certain situations but not sure about it's use in pet dogs.
kelpiecuddles
I'm wondering about possible issues with there potentially being more dogs around with higher testosterone levels if people start choosing this instead of castration. Maybe I'm cynical but I see a lot of boofhead males with badly bred and poorly socialised dogs who will choose this 'desexing' option rather than traditional methods. I realise many of those wouldn't have desexed anyway but there are also many who would have.
Steph M
That's true, perhaps as well because its cheaper. You might have a point, but the optimist in me says perhaps some who wouldn't have bothered desexing for cost or manliness etc etc may do so. There will always be dipsticks with idiotic dogs, but with any luck at least they can't make more idiotic dogs.
