Hi, we have a 14wk old samoyed puppy he gets very excited when he sees us and as he gets excited he starts to cry with his excitment and when we pat him saying hello he wees with the excitemtent - with 5 of us in the family he does it to each of us so by the end i have 5 puddles to clean up

is this normal

will he grow out of it

is there anything we can do to help him with bladder control

thank you :)

:) ignore him when you greet him .. just say "hello XYZ" in passing .... save pats etc for when he is sitting/lying down / is obeying you ;)

don't use a high pitched "babytalk" voice ....

:) it is pretty normal ..and takes management to help him .

thank you -

is it a male puppy thing.... we also have a female samoyed who is 20wks old and within 2 days of having her she would go to the door when she wanted to go to the toilet - the male puppy ( which we did everything the same as for the female) is a shocker - he wees inside all the time and sometimes poos too.....

just wondering also is it harder or longer to train a male puppy ?

The thing to bear in mind is that it is more of a greeting ritual problem than a toilet training problem.

It's extremely important that everyone follows the suggestions by persephone and make your arrivals/greetings ultra calm or this behaviour can continue into adulthood.

You might like to add a quick march outside as you say hello to him, to aid with toilet training. :)

Also visitors to the home should be welcomed inside and pre-warned that they need to calm, THEN introduce him, you'll have more of a chance that way.

Yes it's normal. One of mine has done it and a number of my friends' dogs did the same thing. My puppy seems to have grown out of it at 6 months old (touch wood), he still gets very excited but the wee seems to have stopped.
