An Alaskan couple were so desperate to help their cat they trekked across two avalanches — and their tenacity landed them in jail.

Kristina Clark went to extraordinary lengths to get help for her cat Ninja after his health "started going downhill" on Saturday, reports the Valdez Star.

Vets in her hometown Copper Center refused to treat the cash-strapped 22-year-old unless she paid up front, but staff from a clinic in the town of Valdez — about 100 miles away — said they would help without requiring a deposit.

Clark and her boyfriend, Donney Carlson, tried to drive to Valdez but were stopped by an avalanche blocking the road. So they parked the car, wrapped Ninja in a blanket and started walking.

Authorities from Alaska's Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT) claim they twice warned Clark and Carlson to stop, telling them their journey was holding up dangerous avalanche mitigation work.

The duo, who had already crossed two avalanches, allegedly refused to turn back.

A DOT helicopter then picked up Clark, Carlson and Ninja and flew them to Valdez, where the two humans were charged with disorderly conduct and obstruction of highways.

"We didn't know we were going to get arrested," said Carlson, 20, accusing authorities of not caring about Ninja's fate "at all".

Clark's first phone call from jail was not to family or a lawyer, but to the Valdez Veterinary Clinic.

Dr. Kelly Hawkins, a vet, said Ninja "wouldn't have made it much longer" if he hadn't been treated.

"I have to commend them for doing something to get their cat help," he said.

Hawkins said Ninja is "doing very well" after he was treated for a urinary tract infection, but will remain in the clinic for several more days.

Clark and Carlson were kept behind bars overnight and freed by a judge on an unsecured bond on Sunday morning.

"It was worth it for Ninja," Clark said.

I wouldn't go that far if my Pug had only a urinary tract infection. But if he was actually dying I would.

I don't get why the couple went that far for a UTI.

None of my dogs have ever had a UTI, so I have no idea how serious they can be.

Shame on the local vet for not even looking at a payment plan option to treat the cat for something so serious...

That is one well loved cat I'd say... trekking through Alaska and traversing 2 avalanches to get it the help it needed... well done to the young owners!

What if they were already a bad debtor? The clinic may have been burnt by these people previously so I won't judge the clinic in anyway because we only have one side of the story,

I am glad they loved their pet so much. Hopefully they startr a savings account to be able to put down a deposit at least in the future.
