judy69
Hi everyone, I am posting this on behalf of a friend. She has a 7month old pup which she got from the RSPCA. I will paste what she has put on Facebook so I don't get the details wrong. My 7mth old puppys head distorted over night. And he cant open jaw. Spent a fortune at vet and they dont know what it is. Been a week now. Xrays showed nothing so they thinking it muscular skeletal. He seems to not be in pain will euthanise him if that happens. Any ideas people They took syringes there no infection nothing. Its like a rock. On top head and side face. They thinking it internal so we giving him asprin and antibiotics just in case and benadryl. No change in him. Still wants to love. Jaw only opens a bit and there is a long large lump on his head over right side and on left cheek. It literally happenned over night. We thought it was muscle but first vet said grass seed which turned out wrong. Solid no muscle spasms If anyone has any suggestions as to what it may be it will be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.
minimax
I'm at work so can't see pics, but if the vet has no ideas I'd be seeking a second (third, fourth, fifth...) opinion from another vet, especially if it happened so quickly.
mixeduppup
What did the x-rays show> Was there air or fluid? Perhaps an Ultrasound or CT would reveal more. ETA: it could be an allergic reaction. I've seen hives get really really large. Edited January 20, 2014 by mixeduppup

judy69
Thanks for the replies so far. I am just trying to find out what the xrays showed. Will let you know once I find out.
Loving my Oldies
Poor friend and her dog. If I went to a vet who didn't know what was wrong with my dog and didn't suggest other ways to find out, eg consulting other vets, talking to specialists, researching, I'd be finding another vet. Not always easy depending on where someone lives.
Guest donatella
Oh poor boy I would be going to specialists, the fact that he can only open his jaw part way and his head being distorted like that doesn't sound right to me at all
Purdie
See another Vet.asap. My cat had similar swelling when he ran into a glass door trying to chase a bird that was outside. The swelling was not as bad as the dog but was in the same areas. The swelling went down after a few days. Could he have ran into a door or wall/window .. judy69
No bacteria either. We thought maybe he snapped a ligament or something but then it happened to other side face. He peed hayley bed last night. Didnt even move to pee just lay there. On the up side he was very happy this morn wanted a walk too.
westiemum
I'd be off to an internal medicine specialist pronto. It'll be cheaper in the long run. No point mucking around with this IMO. Good luck and hope you get to the bottom of it quickly. Edited January 20, 2014 by westiemum
judy69
I think she is looking at taking him to another vet for a second opinion. Not to sure what specialist if any that are available in Townsville.
judy69
Someone suggested to her it could be a form of palsy.

cavNrott
I would be taking this dog to the specialists hospital/centre and having an MRI done on him.
Purdie
It could be any number of things so seek out a good Vet.. http://www.caninecre...muscle-myositis
Wundahoo
This is probably masticatory myositis. The dog will need to be diagnosed by a vet who has treated this before. The treatment is usually prednisolone.

Wundahoo
I wonder if this dog has been vaccinated recently ???? A lot of autoimmune conditions seem to be triggered by recent vaccination.
