Growing Too Fast

I found a reference somewhere from a top dobe lady in the states(think she was high up in the dobe club there) which stated that they should reach 3/4 of their adult weight by the time they are 6 months, which actually sounds about right given he's about half his adult weight at four months. I can't remember where I saw it but i'll have a look.

My breed is quite similar. They're huge as babies and then almost grind to a skidding halt by 8-10 months of age. Some of them then won't fill out properly until they're 18 months to over 2. When I got my first Malinois I though, wow I'm getting a HUGE dog out of this puppy that filled two full arms! Nope. 24.5kg and stayed that way for most of her 10 years

lol my daughter called me a helicopterparent to my dobe yesterday. I suppose its partly because I want to do agility with him SOOOOOO BADLY and I just dont want to stuff it up with overfeeding him or anything else:)) Really appreciate forums like this that do not tear strips off novices, but come back with good advice and calm attitudes, ty.

If you want to do agility let him exercise free reign in the yard as much as possible. At my school we start all pups young (controlled of course) so their bodies can grow to compensate for exercise. I don't personally agree with the advice of limit everything until 12 months then go for gold - the body grows in response to stress/movement. Just dont go for 10km runs

I haven't read all the posts so apologise if I am repeating. Have you asked your vet for a hormone test? to test for abnormal growth hormone levels?

I had a hormone issue in a kelpie pup once at about the same age. Huge pup, much bigger than the rest of the litter.

- just a thought :)
