sunnyy Posted January 9, 2014 Share Posted January 9, 2014 Hi all, Was looking for peoples experiences/advise on using Joint Guard & Rose Hip - both seperately and combined. My sisters soon to be 6yo GSD was diagnosed with severe arthritis of the coccyx and mild hip dysplasia. He had his first injection yesterday and has been given Prolet anti-inflammatories. In addition to this I went and purchased Joint Guard this morning from MPW. I was torn between that and RHV, however as the ingredients are so different, I know glucosamine and MSM can be very helpful with arthritis. The reviews of both products have been good from what I've read. I called the vet today to see if I could give both supplements. They confirmed it wouldn't interfere with his medications etc that the vet has prescribed and said using the 2 should be ok. Can he have both joint guard and RHV? I thought we would start the Joint guard today, test and monitor he is ok with it, and pending that he is, then introduce RHV. Does anyone have any experience or opinions in using both supplements? Its not a doubling up of ingredients, so don't see it to be an issue. I know cost could be an issue, but its not a concern for his quality of life. I just wanted to check with experienced people before going ahead and making the second purchase. I've also facebooked RHV asking the question as well. ness Posted January 9, 2014 Share Posted January 9, 2014 (edited) Sunnyy - my experience for what its worth. My youngster Kenz has been taking the RHVC for over 12 months now. Previously she was on Joint guard then Glyde along with fish oil. I switched her cold to the RHVC (and continued the fish oil) I had huge improvements in her over what I had her on previously. She has remained on the RHVC alone with the occasional dose of anti-inflams on a bad day. She is actually on a slightly higher "dose" of the RHVC on advice from the RHVC team and given the tolerance has been safety tested to 5 times loading dose its not a concern. Kenz has a multitude of fully unsubstantiated issues which we are still working through after a long time dealing with specialists. Nothing is going to be 100% in her situation but do I believe its helping yep I do. My now 13 year old BC Ness was started on the RHVC a few months after Kenz (roughly 10 months ago). She had been on Joint Guard for a number of years and still had some front end lameness which resolved once starting the RHVC. Enough that she went out at the age of 12 years 10 months and completed her Tracking Dog title. Nobody could believe she was as old as she was. She ruptured a cruciate and damaged the meniscus about 13 weeks ago now (just after she turned 13) and aside from the standard post surgery 10 days of anti-inflams she is not taking any other meds and is doing very well. I do have her on both Joint Guard and RHVC (and fish oil) since surgery as I had a tub of the joint guard which needed to be finished. Its perfectly safe to have them on both. Cost is the only real issue as there is no safety issue with having them on both. I have to say what impressed me with the RHV was the scientific literature and testing behind the product. Its a bit like any product what might work well for one dog or human may not necessarily work as well for another so there is a bit of trial and error in finding what your dog responds best to but so far I am happy with the product and my experience. I have tried mixing it with yoghurt, cottage cheese, his barf patties and his sardines, with no luck. One sniff and he walks away and won't eat. I must be lucky...I just put the spoonful of powder on Bindi's kibble, add a bit of water to settle the dust & she woofs it down. ness Posted January 11, 2014 Share Posted January 11, 2014 Staffyluv did you try mixing in a small amount rather than the full amount and then gradually increasing it or did you just try adding the loading dose. i had to start Kenz off with less and gradually add it to her meals until she was back to the loading dose for her size. ~Rumour~ Posted January 11, 2014 Share Posted January 11, 2014 It may seem odd but I made little frozen yoghurt 'tablets' for my boy as he wouldn't eat it at first (he is now happy to eat it just sprinkled over his food). Guest Clover Posted January 11, 2014 Share Posted January 11, 2014 (edited) I have my old boy on the RHV (human tablet form) and he is doing quite well. He is about 12 month post partial cruciate tear diagnosis and has not gotten any worse or required any other treatment. My old girl and young girl (2 years old) have plain Green Lipped Mussel & fish oil caps in their dinner. The young girl has just had X-rays done on her hips and her right is slightly not quite right (which was suspected by the way she moves). I have just doubled her dose so we will see how she goes from now. Eta: the old boy was not keen on eating the RHV to begin with. After a week or so of mixing with yogurt or natures gift tin he will now just eat them chucked in his normal food.
