My friends dog that practically lives with mine they play every day lol- about 5 months old is a kelpie cross BC. My pup is a rotti only a little over 8 weeks old.-I know I need to wait unitl after he is immunised. I am looking for a good obedience don't mind travelling to far in Perth. I live in Viveash which is about 10-15 mins from Bassendean. There is one in Middle Swan I have watched not sure of reputation though. Would appreciate any advice on clubs to go to. The kelpie has only been trained at home. Is very sociable and boisterous. He gets car sick unfortuantely unable to combat this problem-went to puppy classes. No longer walks on lead at all. Needs some lessons before she rehomes him as she is loosing her sanity. I told her he is a puppy and a working breed and she says I love him wouldn't rehome him was just letting out anger. Club has an Aus. wide reputation since Gina O'Keefe (Head Instructor) there has been running seminars in the Eastern States. Gina has top trialling results with scores of 199-200 and the club is run using positive reinforcement techniques. gemibabe Posted April 20, 2005 Share Posted April 20, 2005 I think that northern suburbs club is run in Craige. I looked into when shelby was a pup. The sessions are held sunday mornings and you just go there, and find the registration table etc. I think from memory they start at 8am..... but to be on the safe side, go around 8:30am incase they start at 9am... Sorry I don't have a phone number for you There is another club in the hills. Stoneville I think it is... so either way, your looking at 30-40mins travel. Anna H Posted April 20, 2005 Share Posted April 20, 2005 (edited) I'd say Northern Suburbs Training Club is probably the best in Perth... I've been to quite a few now over the years. They do use purely positive training methods, I mainly use the club as a base for socialisation and proofing Chelseas home training. Many people do have great sucess at the club, though I wouldn't recommend it if your dog is very easily distracted as the class numbers can be really big, especially in the higher levels (up to 25 dogs). There are a few DOLers who do go to the club, so it is a great place to socialise the Hoomans too. Edited to say The Northern Suburbs club might be a bit of a distance, it is held at the Carine Open Space on Beach Road, Carine. Classes start from 9am on Sundays. spikey Posted May 5, 2005 Share Posted May 5, 2005 I know this post was started a couple of weeks ago, but I've only just come across this forum, and would like to add a reply! I can certainly recommend the Northern Suburbs Training and Obedience Dog Club (NST & ODC for short!). I joined the club with my 5 year old GSD when we moved to Perth nearly 11 years ago, and worked our way through the classes until we achieved our CD when Coco was 7, what a thrill that was! In those days, training methods were quite different - mainly use of check chains and rope collars, training with food was strongly discouraged and the training methods were quite "regimented". I was a junior instructor there for a while. Sadly Coco had to retire from training due to problems with arthritis. Six months after Coco died (3 years ago), I got another GSD puppy and joined the GSD club but became disillusioned with the club for various reasons, as well as being worried that my pup Simba was becoming obsessive about GSDs as they were the only other dogs he socialised with. So I went back to Northern Suburbs and was pleasantly surprised, the club is now run by different people, although many of the (excellent) instructors remained and the club thrives on "food and fun" training methods. I had a great time until sadly my marriage broke up, I had to move into rented accommodation and was eventually forced to find a new home for Simba a year ago, which absolutely broke my heart. I am now in a new relationship and my boyfriend has a Belgian Shepherd (Groenendael - the black ones), a beautiful dog, great temperament and very lively, but not very well trained! My boyfriend lives only a few minutes from Carine Open Space (where the club trains) so we have joined up with Northern Suburbs and will start classes this week. He knew I would love to get back to dog training and offered to let me take his beloved Belgian - although he has an ulterior motive obviously of getting his dog trained If you want to join Northern Suburbs, the way to sign up is: If you have a puppy up to 18 weeks (I think), get down to the grounds on a Sunday morning about 8.30am and sign up and you can join the puppy class that day (starts at 9am). If you have an older puppy or adult dog, you can join up at the caravan after 9.15, but will not start classes until the following week, when you go to orientation class at 9am. Orientation class explains how the club works, the training methods used etc, and also does some basic work with you and the dog to enable the instructors to assess you and your dog to decide which class to place you in. For most people, that's Class 1A and then you're on your way! The club doesn't train on the Sundays of long weekends or if there is a trial or members competition on. You get a regular newsletter that has the training dates in it so you know which Sundays you can have a sleep in! Wishing your friend good luck with training! Hmm I take him to hillary's dog beach and am used to cleaning up vomit so wouldn't be a problem if they have taps etc that i can rinse him off under before class lol or else he will smell. Has a tendancy to sit in it or lie eww. Thankyou I will wait to Zeus' puppy classes finish at the end of may and I will definately look at joining up even if I can only take one dog at a time ntil oh isn't working. Jewl. Spikey - I so love BSD's ... there is a Groenendael that often comes down to the club, be lovely to see two! I didn't have to wait one week I also signed up before 9am. It's recommended that you arrive about 30mins earlier, so you can avoid the crush and your dog can calm down. @ChelseasMum: The Member's Competition is this week?
