When To Desex

yep, just double checked on the council website and I'm almost positive my council charges us annually. It doesn't come right out and way one way or the other but they offer a pro rata discount if you register in the second half of the yearly term so that seems pretty damning lol. $128 undesexed or $31 desexed, yearly.

Some of you other council areas have it pretty good

QLD has annual fees, NSW has a one off lifetime fee. Different states different rules.

Lasareina, you may find you have to do a little more to maintain the super muscley look but I have seen plenty of castrated staffies that look AWESOME!!! They get walked and played with and are in great condition :)

NSW has life time registration across the board - Queensland doesn't although some councils offer multi-year registrations.

It honestly makes no difference when you get Hunter neutered - once he looses his male hormones his body will change. It depends on his family history how muscular he was ever going to be though, so you really can't say x is going to cause y :)

Snap Jumabaar

I have spoken to a couple of breeders recently that will desex pups at 8 weeks and another at 10 weeks. Not only do I think this is wrong physically and mentally but it also means that puppies will go to homes at 10 or 12 weeks, so some vital early bonding is missed out on.

The reasoning seems to be - oh, these are only pets - we don't normally sell pets, and our bloodlines are too valuable to not do this.... and of course there is the justification that it doesn't affect the dogs?

I should add that I am 100% for desexing of all non-showing and non- registered breeders, just not this early.

Thanks for the info guys ... I actually saw his dad the other day when I took him to his breeder for a visit ... dad is very stocky and muscular but Hunter is already taller than him. Its amazing how alike they are ... their faces are near identical  Hunter already has the tendency to gain weight really quickly if we miss any excercise during the week so I guess we will have to be extra careful about that when we get him done as well.

  • 3 weeks later...

My council is also a yearly rate, we will get Casper desexed before its next due in July, he will be around 12-14 mths old.

We will be getting a malamute next year and contacted many breeders, they ALL desex the pup before we get them regardless, so they are done before 10 weeks and it seems the norm for these breeders?
