Her Majesty Dogmad
Tony Abbott doesn't give a flying f--k about animals - that's plainly obvious from his stance. He backs live export all the way - no interest in stopping the vile cruelty that is meted out to the animals that get sent off on ships and planes. It's disgusting. I certainly didn't vote for him. Alyosha
Were they effective? Considering the export cruelty seems to be ongoing I'm not sure what they were doing...?

Little Gifts
A whole bunch of committees were given the axe. Apparently any outstanding committee work will go back to the govt agency it sprang from to be completed. Or not.
Christina
As much as I can't stand him he may have a point depending on whether this particular committee did anything of any use ? There are so many useless committees that cost the tax payer millions & that actually achieve nothing of any practical use or value whatsoever. Millions spent looking at the blatantly obvious & then publishing the blatantly obvious with no obvious solutions seems to be a common thing. The live export still goes on, puppy farms still carry on with approval for pet shops to buy from them & then sell, chickens are still over crowded, greyhounds & racehorses that are not fit for racing are mass slaughtered/disposed of & shelters & welfare organisations mass euthanise. So what were this advisory committee doing ?
Loving my Oldies
So what were this advisory committee doing ? Attending meetings at taxpayers' (ie us, you and me) expense.
Pretty Miss Emma
Just because the things are still going on doesn't mean the advisory committee didn't do anything, it just means that the government didn't want to listen to what they had to say and take it on advisement. With no advisory committee it means that there are a lot of welfare issues now that won't even get spoken about and considered let alone ever get changed or have hope for change. Well not within the next 3 years anyway. Looking at the list that was in the media release today it is quite obvious that this government doesn't care about any animals be they hominid or other from all the "non-compulsory committees" that will no longer exist. Just because something isn't compulsory doesn't make it a waste of money. It's really eally upsetting watching anything that does not represent direct monetary value being sliced and anything that would show that the government had even the most minute ounce of humanity. Christina
It's really eally upsetting watching anything that does not represent direct monetary value being sliced and anything that would show that the government had even the most minute ounce of humanity. But it hasn't got humanity for animals & everything is related to money. Even many of the known welfare groups have their own agenda which is often based on money, power & control & crackpot ideas. We have recently had parliamentary committees for companion animals & some of the proposals mentioned were not really very good for the welfare of animals either. Are You Serious Jo
Tony pretends issues don't exist, why would he want a bunch of experts to remind him. It's disgusting that he is disregarding the issue with live export even though fresh footage shows cruelty is still going on. But if you think about it he treats fellow human beings pretty badly so other animals wouldn't even get a spare thought.
Steve
They are only cutting the committee not the ability to focus on animal welfare via other means within the department of Ag where it probably should have been anyway - might have got us further as the committee had no clout anyway. Ive no doubt the people who sat on it - especially Animals Australia etc will still get their message across. There are other things he is scrapping Im more concerned about. Are You Serious Jo
Cutting advisory committees wouldn't be a concern with competent government, but with this one it is. Greg Hunt went to wiki for info for goodness sake, then we have no senior people attending the important UN talks on agreements on climate change. They really don't care about anything or anyone outside their circle of friends.
Steve
Yeah well I didn't vote for him either and still cant believe that so many did - but they did. I suppose it all comes down to the fact that the committees he is abolishing were never going to be listened to anyway and them existing was all about making it look like they were consulting those involved. Not much point in leaving them there if he never had any intention to look at or listen to a single thing that came out of them. Not that I think any government would anyway. May as well save the money and get experts they agree with to give their opinions for free.

I agree with this, the removal of any nod towards animal welfare is not a good sign, we can expect no positive steps towards improved animal welfare and it is likely issues that do arise will be dismissed. Are You Serious Jo
He is far more interested in business relationships than animal cruelty. He really does just pretend things aren't important if it might impact his Australia is open for business plan. It really makes me sick to think of what might go on now that the Indonesians know he will turn a blind eye to it.
