What Type Of Tick Is This?

We are having a weekend away in Byron Hinterland - I put Frontline on both dogs on Wednesday for ticks - just found this on Eva's collar. Is it a paralysis tick or just a brown dog tick?

I've just gone over both dogs and can't see anymore...

ETA - Sorry I can't get the photo any bigger.

Can't tell from the photo but Frontline is pretty useless. Advantix much better.

I went Frontline as they are going to the beach and going to be wet....

Can I put Advantix on too or will that be overload?

Look at the underside of the tick, google will show you the difference between a paralysis and cattle tick, it's easy to spot once you have pictures of the underside of both.

If I find another I will have a look under - this tick is dead now.

There is a chart somewhere on the net, I used to have it.

it looked like this

ticks.jpg

the paralysis tick has two different coloured sets of legs.

If there's anything that makes me cringe all over it's a tick. :vomit:

Usually the paralysis ticks are well dug in & not easy to remove & leave a lump afterwards, which takes a while to go away (in my dogs anyway). It looks like one of the other types to me, but hard to see in the photo. PT's are a light grey in colour...we call them "shellbacks" here in NSW

Me too. There is something completely abhorrent about them.

Paralysis ticks have all their legs clustered around the head. Other ticks have the legs spread around the body. As the diagrams. No idea what your tick is - it looked like a fly to me ..... must get new glasses!!

So what would this one be?? I live approx 1 hrs east of Adelaide and people don't think there are ticks around here..... I took this one off a baby sleepy lizard this morning. It is not the first time I have picked one off of a local reptile.

I agree with Sheena, Lisey's tick doesn't look like a paralysis tick from what I can see, but it's difficult to be sure because of the pic.

Skyfool's looks like a bush tick, although I have never seen one that colour.

They are that colour if they are mature fully engorged ones, very common on lizards and echidnas I have found

I wonder if they tend to change colour depending where, & on what, they are living? Like chameleons & some other lizards. That one looks exactly the right sort of colour to blend in with the lizard it was found on.
