Seita
Just curious what is the longest anyone has had to wait for a bitch to come in season for the first time? One of the pups from my last litter is in an agility home and the owner wanted to wait until she'd had her first season before desexing her. That bitch is now 20 months old and still hasn't come in season as far as the owner is aware. There hasn't been any sign of a silent season or any unusual swelling of the vulva etc over this time either. Her sister who I kept has just had her 2nd season so nothing unusual there. Has anyone had to wait this long or longer? The owner will be desexing the bitch later this year regardless but I wonder if I should be worried that there might be an infertility issue in the lines, any thoughts? Not unusual for very fit females of any species to have delayed menstruation, or if they are below an optimum weight, think it below about 80% of ideal in humans...........greyhound bitches often don't come in until they have a break or retire
Diva
22 months was my longest. Large breed. Cycled regularly at 8 monthly intervals afterwards. Don't know about fertility, not bred, but very healthy.
JRG
24/25 months. Cycling every 12/13 months after that. Had puppies with no problems. Active (working) bred girl
OSoSwift
My WHippet was 18 months old and cycled around 7 to 8 monthly on average after that. She has recently been desexed.
indigirl
My iggy bitches have their first season at 16-18 months. I love it!
Rebanne
not my actual bitch but bitches I have bred. One was over 2 before her first, the other is now 2 years and 5 months and causing her owner to tear out her hair! Not uncommon in my breed. But rarely before 16 months. Alyosha
My young girl was just over 2 years. Her litter sister came in just after 12 months so it was a bit of a worrying wait!
ellz
3 years. Then another 3 years until she came into season again. None of her children have had any fertility issues, male or female.
Fordogs
Ellz, then I guess that I should not have to worry about mine that had 1st season at 15 months and has not had another since then, it has now been 14 months. My vet wants to give her something to bring her in ??? The odd thing is her dam has always been a 4 month girl all her life
OSoSwift
If you want to breed from her I would not be giving anything, especially hormonal products, to a bitch.
Seita
thanks for the replies, glad to hear that others have had to wait a long time too! The bitch is being desexed now as we were never intending to breed her but I am glad to know that it's not likely to be a fertility issue.
Fordogs
oSoSwift, I said that I will wait it out. I prefer not to use drugs unnecessarily without talking to a reproduction specialist. Will wait until the new year and make an appointment if she is not in by then. :)
sandgrubber
As I understand it, it's healthier to desex BEFORE the first season. Lowers chances of various cancers. If they intend to desex and she has attained full stature, why not go ahead?
