kelpiecuddles
Yep, I'm going to Bunnings tomorrow to get padlocks, the only one I had here doesn't fit through the loop in the latch. Luckily Bunnings is literally across the road from work so it's an easy detour.
Loving my Oldies
Possibly, but I would think a padlock would be just as effective, I don't see him climbing my colourbond fences to get in. I wouldn't be too sure. To enter someone else's property and kick their dog in broad daylight is pretty extreme!! Yes. If it is happening, I can't see a padlock being a total defence. Definitiely go ahead with the cameras. Seems a funny state of affairs, though. I hope you get to the bottom of it - very unsettling for you. Little Gifts
I'd be making a booby trap outside the gate - a lightly covered hole with a pile of poop of something unpleasant in it (spikes would work too!). I would go ape if someone did that to my dogs. I would be ranting and raving on their front door step and they would be calling the police on me! Part of me would be a teensy bit scared but I figure if I act crazier than them then they'll give me a wide berth. No telling what a crazy dog lady might be capable of! mumof4girls
Did the neighbor admit he did it too your son ? You would think if he didn't do it he would come over and tell you .. I would just go talk to him and if he says no say you now have cameras up and have contacted the police so whoever irt is will be caught .. Apologies that the person that told you must have gotten him mixed up with someone else .. Play it cool , it doesn't have to be confrontational just let him know you know and so do the authorities that may be enough :-)
kelpiecuddles
He told my son that he yells at them but doesn't kick/hurt them. He was however sitting next to the neighbour that the information originally came from so I'm not sure if he would have admitted it any way. Regardless I don't need more problems. He knows now that we know SOMETHING was going on, even if it was just yelling so hopefully locks on the gates and things will settle down.
persephone
Hopefully the padlocks will do the trick . Going into someone's yard and hurting their dogs ... if you can, I strongly advise getting a little surveillance camera which can be attached to a tree or wall .. Daisy.Tea
That's incredibly scary. I put locks on the gates because I became overly paranoid about someone coming in the backyard to take the dogs or break into the house. As our backyard gates are only really used on weekends it hasn't caused us too much grief coming and going.
Steph M
can you get a cheap camara, or fake one in an obvious place to deter him? And a sign alerting to this. Though I would be going for a real one and taking it to the cops. Utter a-hole!

If I'm worried about someone being dangerous, I act even more mental and dangerous than them, in the hopes that they will avoid the crazy lady  Edited October 31, 2013 by Aussie3
Panto
I'm not sure mine would be hanging around to be kicked! They's make themselves scarce I reckon. How can you be sure it's true? Would your dog really stand still for repeated kickings? True or not, you should have your gates locked to prevent access to your dogs when you aren't home. I'd also be casually asking your neighbour if the dogs are still annoying him. An ounce of prevention and all that.. If you have a good neighbourly relationship already, this is great advice. I have given longstanding and reliable neighbours my phone number and introduced them to my dog so that they know to call me if she's barking out of character (which they may notice as annoying) or if we have a visiting dog that we're sitting for, in case they turn out to be a day barker whilst we're out. Cheap wireless camera - a colleague has this set up and I've seen it work. She logs into the IP address via her iphone. http://www.kogan.com/au/shop/cameras/ip-cameras-webcams/?gclid=CNufqqGOwroCFYchpQodFmIAbA

We just had to subscribe (very cheaply done) to a static IP service so that the IP never changes. :) Edited November 1, 2013 by Powerlegs
kelpiecuddles
My neighbours have my number already, these are people who we have in the past stood out the front with and had a drink, kids play together, etc. We have a good neighbour relationship which is why it's so puzzling he wouldn't just approach me! At any rate it looks like a solution has been sorted.
BC Crazy
If I thought someone had been kicking my dogs while I was out I'd be reporting it to the police. Dog help the offender, I would lose my sh*t. I'd also be keeping my dogs either inside or in a locked run. Same. Totally agree. I do keep my back yard gate pad locked anyway at all times. I don't trust anyone. They are just too precious. Edited November 1, 2013 by BC Crazy
kelpiecuddles
Well I have to say I'm pretty inclined to believe that this did happen, we were out today and Josie happily trotted along beside me until she spotted a couple of older blokes with grey hair, very similar looking to my neighbour. Immediately she cowered and walked around me as if trying to get away, something she has NEVER done before, she has always been extremely confident and outgoing to anyone. This is the second time I've seen her cower like this recently, the first time was before this information came to hand and I didn't connect the dots(but it was another similar looking man). The gates are locked and a camera is on the way.

He didn't have what i consider a valid reason to do this (his dog was getting into my yard and could get out again if it wanted to as it could climb 6ft fences) and i have no idea how many times he did it but he doesn't do it now, he's still an a--hole though. Cameras are def. the way to go. Edited November 2, 2013 by dogmad
lilypily
I'm ultra paranoid. I have never ever left my dogs outside while i'm out. If this man is mental enough to kick your dogs, by blocking access with padlocks, i'd be to scared that he would then choose to throw bait over the fence.
