gaznazdiak
I recently lost my best mate Poo, an otherwise healthy 14 yo Tenterfield Terrier, to a sudden renal failure. While there is no way to definitively prove the cause beyond doubt, my research leads me to believe and my vet to cautiously concur that this was most likely a direct result of giving him Jerhy Chicken Tenders jerky treats. There have been several hundred dogs in the US and a growing number here in Australia killed by chicken treats made in China and Thailand. These "treats" are full of banned antibiotics, preservatives and in one case discovered in China the jerky was stored in direct contact with rat poison in the warehouse prior to packaging. I am trying to warn as many dog lovers as I can to avoid these toxic time-bombs at all cost and have started a petition to try to have them removed from the Australian market, and would like to ask members to help me stop these unnecessary deaths by signing the petition at the following address: http://www.communityrun.org/petitions/ban-imported-dog-treats-from-australia?source=facebook-share-button&time=1380775014 I will never be able to forgive myself for unknowingly killing my little friend, and with luck and support, I hope to prevent anyone else from making the same tragic and irreversible mistake. Rosetta
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your little dog. There was a similar story on here recently linking the same treats to serious illness. Don't blame yourself - we tend to trust that the food sold for our dogs is safe. This is far from the case - particularly food produced in China or Thailand.
YvonneM
Are you allowed to post or link or a photograph of the packet of treats? I have some chicken jerky treats for my boy (7.5 months old) and would hate to give him somethat that would potentially harm him and will toss them! Or do we avoid all treats/pet food manufactured in China or Thailand? Anywhere else I should be worried about? I am so sorry for your loss of your buddy
Guest hankodie
I'm really so sorry for your loss OP I'm not sure these are the ones that OP was referring to but this brand is also made in Thailand. I think they sell these at Coles: http://www.dogslife.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/masterpet-624x920.jpg I've also read some pretty horrible stuff about treats made in China/Thailand and I avoid them at all costs. persephone
Or do we avoid all treats/pet food manufactured in China or Thailand? Yes! Not really sure why people buy them in the first place - same goes for cheap imported lollies/treats for humans . I keep well away!

I am fairly certain I have some of those branded treats in my treat jar at home .... ditching them when I get home. So ..... on the back of this .... what are some good treats for doggies? I usually buy yoghurt drops from my local petbarn type store which Banjo looooves, but in the warmer weather they are not stocking them because they melt. DesertDobes
While travelling I brought some rawhide chews for my dogs from Bilo because they had to spend so much time in their crates. BOTH dogs had tetanus type lock jaw tremors immediately afterwards- taught me a lesson, normally they only eat raw food.
trinabean
Or do we avoid all treats/pet food manufactured in China or Thailand? Yes! Not really sure why people buy them in the first place - same goes for cheap imported lollies/treats for humans . I keep well away! Yes, I even avoid seafood imported from Asia for us too (like the Vannemei prawns in Coles) I suppose that there are tests done on them to ensure they are ok, but I'm just suspicious of food that has been made/ grown in countries that may have lower health/safety standards than Australia. I used to feed my dog some chicken jerky as a puppy, but stopped after reading about adverse health effects on a boxer forum. Up until then, I had presumed that pet food was proven fit for consumption, with laws and checks in place much like human food. Gaznazdiak, I'm so sorry for your loss. I have signed your petition. ETA: I now buy treats made by a vet nurse at the specialist clinic i take Bruno to. She works with allergy dogs and makes jerky from human grade meat. pie
So sorry to hear of your loss, this was particularly close to me because your Tentie looks just like an older version of mine - very similar. Please don't beat yourself up, you thought you were spoiling your mate, it's not your fault - these products shouldn't be in the country Thanks for sharing your story to get the message out there. I will sign your petition
Staffyluv
I am sorry to hear of your loss, it is always hard to lose our furry family members. Ugh, I just bought a packet of those to give them a try (and he loves them).. I usually buy the Black Dog ones. Will be tossing them immediately. OSoSwift
SO very very sorry to hear that you lost your gorgeous Tentie. Please do not blame yourself, there should be far more testing done on imported products. Stories like this a re avery good reason NOT to feed imported treats from China etc. I am going to share this.

Rawhide is something I wouldn't touch with a bargepole - all sorts of nasties used in the manufacture, bleach among them.
Brandiandwe
I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I must admit that I avoid anything not made in Australia, but this really brings things home.
Loving my Oldies
Gaznazdiak, I am so sorry to read your story. It is a tragedy you could not have foreseen and I will be signing your petition. Rawhide is something I wouldn't touch with a bargepole - all sorts of nasties used in the manufacture, bleach among them. Yes! Don't touch them ever ever ever. I think we need to get across the message whenever and wherever we can: Don't give anything to our dogs and cats that comes from China. This, I admit, is going to become more and more difficult as the new government seems hell bent in giving in to all and any demands by "our near neighbours" and that means allowing them to flood our supermarket shelves with dangerous goods. kelpiecuddles
In terms of prepackaged treats I'm pretty sure the new treat range from Purina is aussie made and maybe the blackdog ones?
M United
Sorry to hear about your loss and thanks for the information. I mainly only buy Australian made treats.
Danois
I'm ok with Thailand ones from mainstream AU brands as I know the general quality requirements. Don't touch China made ones and had someone in pet industry manufacturing say the same.
Wundahoo
There is now a reporting system in place to monitor adverse events associated with pet food. It's an AVA initiative that came about as a result of a number of pet food related or caused incidents during 2008-2009, particularly the Kramar chicken jerky issue. Only vets can use the system to report suspected food associated adverse events but owners are encouraged to request their vet to enter data if they feel it is warranted. The system was launched in February 2012 and after a year it has brought to light the fact that there are still some cases of Fanconi-like syndrome occurring that have been associated with various dog treats. The cause of the problem has not been determined. http://www.ava.com.au/12072 http://www.ava.com.au/petfast
minimax
Good luck if you try and ask on their FB page about their quality control or ingredients, I tried once and my question kept getting deleted until I was banned. I just wanted to know if the chicken stick things were as affected by pesticides, antibiotics and poisons as the chicken tenders, but they didn't want to respond, so I took that as a yes. bedazzledx2
You have to read the fine print on a lot of products too. I was keen on the duck jerky from New Zealand until it read that it is only packaged in NZ and made from imported ingredients. Not trusting imported ingredients from unknown sources!
