Oncologist Recommendations In Sydney

Hi,

Pretty devastated this evening after noticing a lump on my 5 yr old female GSD's hip on Wednesday. Took her straight up to the vet and today he went in to biopsy the lump and it was a lot worse then first thought it was under/intertwined with muscle, arteries so it was very very deep, 4 layers of stitches. The mass has been sent away for testing and unfortunately he didn't get all of it due to it being near major nerves and arteries , there is a slight chance that it might be benign tumour but unlikely.

Just wanting to know a good pet oncologist in Sydney to see if there is anything that can be done...

There are a few oncologists in Sydney - depends on what area you are in. Peter Bennett has recently joined the University of Sydney Teaching Hospital, Tony Moore and Angela Frimberger are at the Animal Referral Hospital at Homebush and Veronika Langova is at the Small Animal Specialist Hospital in North Ryde. Hopefully some DOL members will be able to let you know their experiences. I have referred several cases to Veronika and find her great to deal with and my clients have all been happy. I haven't had any personal dealings with the other oncologists but they are all held in very high regard.

Thank you Rappie, doesn't bother where they are just want the best available. I just don't get how a totally healthy well breed 5 yr old GSD gets this. Lost my last 2 large mixed breeds to cancer but one was 10 and the other 11. This one has been fed the best foods/natural foods, the best of everything thinking it will help against this exact thing happening.

I'll vouch for Veronika Langova - she's very good with canines and their very worried owners.

My boy had a surgery done at North Ryde by Stephen Fearnside - He's very good if you need a surgeon

All the best with your girl.

Thanks Dwynwen,

I have a very good vet but cancer isn't his specialty. With her being only 5 yrs old and very fit and healthy ( so I thought) 2 hr walks, running, jumping, amazing appetite, no temp, blood test came back all normal and there was no pain in the area I owe it to her to exhaust all avenues to help her as I know she would give her life to protect me if needed. Im a 40 yr old tradie crying like a baby Im just devastated....

Dave, I know from experience that 'tough' guys have squishy hearts too :o Once you've got the results from the biopsy then you will be in a better position to pursue your options. If you do go to SASH, the team there are exactly that - a team, and different specialists will weigh in with their opinions if needed even though one specialist might be managing the case. Unfortunately cancer can be one of those things that just happens, and when it does, it can absolutely suck. It may not make you feel any better but in all likelihood there is very little that you could have done to stop it happening, but you've done the best thing you could and let the investigative process start quickly. Hopefully you'll get some more person experiences but if you need any other general information just let me know.

My vet said that there was nothing I could of done since it was so deep, and the fact she showed no signs of anything. I had a look at there website and they seem very good so once the results are in and if its needed I will request a referral. She should be home tomorrow morning apparently she will be very sore for a while, so taking next week off and my wife the week after for any appointments needed and just to spoil her..

Thanks Stans mum and frufru .

All the best to you and your girl, Dave. Nothing wrong with a bloke who cries :)

I understand what you're going though. My darling cat is recuperating on my lap after unexpected major surgery for suspected lymphoma. No symptoms and we were lucky it was picked up during a routine dental. Still waiting on lab results but I'm just concentrating on getting her through this recovery from surgery.

Dogs are like that - they are stoic and have very high pain thresholds.

I'm so sorry to read about your girl Dave73, but happy to know she has such a devoted dad and a mum to see her through.

As Rappie says, you would be in very good hands at SASH (North Ryde). I had a few old dogs over the years and have had several late night/early morning dashes over to them.

I've also had experiences at Animal Referral Centre at Homebush and would give them top marks as well.

Have to clarify, that I've no experience with oncologists, just other specialists.

Keep us posted as to how you all go.

Sorry, I haven't read the whole thread... I'm not sure if anyone has recommended Dr Tony Moore at Veterinary Oncology Consultants in Sydney. He will also see you at the Animal Referral Hospital in Homebush.

Dr Tony Moore studied under Dr Greg Ogilvie and has published several papers with him. If I lived in Sydney, Tony would be my first choice

I can personally vouch for Veronika Langova as she treated my lab boy when he was diagnosed with Cancer and she was just wonderful, very compassionate, caring and genuinely lovely lady and an extremely competent and knowledgeable Oncologist. She also put me in touch with Dr Karen Goldrick, a Holistic Vet at All Natural Vet Care at Russell Lea, as I was concerned at the affect of the Chemo on my boy and I will be eternally grateful to Karen for the compassionate care she gave my beautiful boy and the emotional support she provided to me and when my boy's time came  she came out to our home and her tender, compassionate and very caring manner during this extremely emotional and gutwrenching time will never be forgotten.

I am very sorry about your girl and wishing you all the best for a positive outcome for her. You are both in my thoughts and I know only too well how devastated you must be thinking the worst, but hang in there and stay strong for your beloved girl.

We're also a long time patient of All Natural at Russell Lea - Karen has been beyond great with some difficult conditions and one particularly difficult dog ...

I understand completely the "where did I go wrong" thinking .... it's natural and we all do it.
