Tick Prevention

Hi All

I'm starting my planning for our Qld trip (with dogs!) in June/ July next year. Given I live in Vic, I don't really have to worry about the paralysis tick.

My question is what do people use? Given our dogs will go swimming and walk through the bush etc, I'm guessing the Preventic collar is not enough?

I am a little wary of using Advantix as the last time I used that Kinta had hot spots, swelling and scabs at all of the applicator sites, so I'm trying to find something else that she won't react so badly to.

Any suggestions are welcome :)

I wouldn't use, Scalibor plus Advantix plus Permoxin. A massive overload of chemicals (Advantix and Permoxin contain same main ingredient). I also wouldn't use scalibor for dogs who swim as it affects marine life.

It seems you are in a bit of a bind Leo as Advantix is really the best option. If it's any consolation you are traveling in the dead of winter so there wont be as many ticks (but still out there!)

We just take our scalibor off before swimming, then put it on again afterwards. We haven't seen a tick in the 5+ months we've been using it.

I'm using Scalibor now and am wondering how many ticks were you seeing before and what product were you using?

He's a pup, and we started using it within a few days of getting him, so it's hard to say. But, we do live in a paralysis tick area, and he does socialise a lot with other dogs and get walked through park areas, and swim in the river, so I think he would have a had a few opportunities to get even normal brown ticks.

semi engorged ticks forund the next morning on two other dogs,, both wearing preventick collars..the collars are replaced every month to 6 weeks ( collar says every 2 months) ticks found: 1 under chin the other just behind the crease of the ear..

last yesr I used kiltix... still had massive tick problem.

all dogs now washed, soaked in permoxin and doing shorn sheep impersonations...

I had a convo with our Bayer rep recently as most/all the dogs in the remote community I work in swim, and a lot of them wear the Kiltix collars - although this is for bush ticks not paralysis.

She said if they get wet, take them off to dry, then before putting back on the dog, tap the collar on concrete a few times to re-release the actives.

I'm guessing Scalibor works the same way?

Apparently you have to wait till the dog is dry before you put the collar back on.

If anyone is interested I brought 2 Scalibor collars the other day but am unable to use them in conjunction with Advantix. So if anyone would like to buy them just pm me. I have opened one but neither have been used. I love the look of them, they are really thin & best of all, they don't smell at all.

Oh really Jemma thats interesting. My Vet was unsure actually. His hesitation made me very doubtful. I don't want them to have a tick problem but I also don't want to make them sick with a chemical OD either. And the fact that you have to put them back on a dry dog. They just wont work for us while we are away as my guys come out on the boat with us & are in & out of the water all day.

  • 1 month later...

I've been using Scalibor collars for about 2 months and found a half engorged paralysis tick on my dog last week.

Fortunately he is fine. I'm now thinking of using Advantix and a tick collar and am wondering if anyone is doing this. And if so, what brand of collar are you using?

If you are using any tick collar. It is pretty much useless if your dog is going swimming every day. Like wise with any top spot. If the dog is going to be spending a considerable time wet or swimming, I think personally you would be wasting your money as any benefit you would have by putting on a tick collar or top spot would be washed away when swimming. Best course of action there is twice daily checks. You can bath in the likes of permoxin or Fidos Free Itch Concentrate shampoo every few days as these products claim to last up to three days. Again, if swimming, any benefit you have by using them would be washed off.

I use the preventic collar. On the back of the box:

"Do not use any other pesticide whilst collar is being worn" and "Remove collar before washing or swimming, once replaced protection may take 24 hours to re-establish"

If anything since having to resort to tick collars is I have found where the ticks used to be be found around the front part of the body, they are now being found inside the thighs and around the eyes/mouth of the dogs. I live in high paralysis tick area, and we can pull anything off up to about 6 ticks a day of my dogs. I have found Advantix used to cause sores on the application area. Bayer tried to tell me it was not the product but hot spots. However I stopped using the product, the sores went away. I think it was akin to the oily product sitting on top of the skin and moisture/water getting under neath and then causing a wet sore. I was recently using Advantix on a pup here... Still had ticks.

best advise is just check them frequently.

The old rule of thumb is "Do not use two green labels" This covers Kiltix, Permoxin, Malaban, Maldacin and the now not available Proban tablet

Scalibor MSDS:

"Effects on Aquatic Organisms:

As is common with many pyrethoids, Deltamethrin has a high toxicity to fish and crustaceans under laboratory conditions. In laboratory trials, the LC 50 for fish was 1 - 10 micrograms/

L.The collar should therefore be removed before swimming, bathing or shampooing the dog to avoid any impacts on aquatic organisms"

Scalibor product leaflet:

" The SCALIBOR collar is a sustained release control product. It exerts best effect for hte control of the named ticks 2-3 weeks after application. The collar should therefore be applied 2-3 weeks before the dog is likely to be exposed to infestation"

"The use of SCALIBOR collar may not prevent tick attachment, as ticks are not killed immediately. In paralysis tick area, daily searching of the entire body of the dog and the removal of any ticks is required with particular attention around the ears" (My comment: NOT JUST THE EARS!!)

"The effect of swimming, bathing or shampooing on efficiency has not been established.

The collar should be removed before swimming, bathing or shampooing the dog because the active substance is harmful to fish and other aquatic organisms"
