Casima
Hi! my young agility dog just turned 2 and I would like to get his hips (and elbows?) scored. I've no idea where to get him xrayed or where to send the films and hopeing to get some recommendations. I did try to search for information but didn't find what I needed. I am located in southern sydney and the dog is a border collie. Thanks for any help or advice!
dancinbcs
Austral Vets, Vineyard Vets or Nth Richmond vets are all experienced with hip x-rays and do a great job. Not sure about the other 2 but Austral will x-ray without sedation if the dog cooperates and stays still. If they will not stay still they need a GA. Rawlinson in SA will score the films done without any form of sedation and he is doing scoring for most people I know now. The AVA require the dog to have a GA, they take ages to score and you have no idea who on the panel will be doing the scoring.
2boxer
My understanding is to get an "official" score, the X-rays need to be done under ga, then sent to AVA. The hips have to be in the correct position to get the X-ray and it is not possible conscious.
poppop
Definitely got to Rob Zammit at Vineyard Vet, NW Sydney, as he is very experienced in doing the x rays. Also ask for the 'greyhound' GA - propofol - as it's very gentle on the dog, and they come round easily afterwards and are not all groggy.

The hips have to be in the correct position to get the X-ray and it is not possible conscious. Only for breeds with compulsory hip scoring and even then you can get anyone to score them, not just the AVA. I don't know anyone who uses the AVA as they can take up to 6 weeks and you have no idea who from the panel with do the scoring, so no consistency of results. Most Border Collies are done without GA (if they will co operate)and scored now by Rawlinson who can have a turnaround of as little as 24 hours. This still gives you an official hip score certificate. We all used to use Wyburn so the results were consistent and now he has retired everyone uses Rawlinson.
