luvmybulldog Posted August 28, 2013 Share Posted August 28, 2013 My beautiful Crumpet has just been taken into emergency surgery to have her spleen removed because it was twisted - I'm just wondering what sort of recovery period she will have if she comes through the surgery. I'm completely confused and can't remember anything the specialist said before they took her in. Everything happened in such a rush - Is there anyone who has any advice or anything that could relax me a bit before they call - I'm terrified - She has been through so much over the last 10 months. It should help you although e reason is for cancer in that thread. However the info should help I think. It seems dogs and humans can live very well without a spleen. Kavik Posted August 28, 2013 Share Posted August 28, 2013 Diesel had his spleen removed for the exact same reason on Christmas Eve last year (great timing hey!). They also tacked his stomach to his abdominal wall so it can't twist again. He stayed at the hospital for 3 days (from memory) so they could keep an eye on him and until he was eating fine etc. The main change in his care was his diet. The usual no exercise for a couple of hours before or after eating. Initially they had him on tinned food specially formulated for digestive issues, and then I changed to the dry of the same food. But I found that I had problems keeping weight on him and had to feed what I thought was an enormous amount of the very expensive food to keep him at a good weight. So with approval from the vet I am feeding a homemade (raw) diet. Once he recovered from the surgery and I got his weight back up he has been fine. I did read about someone elses dog with a similar problem to do with the spleen the other day on my facebook. Cant remember the details and what the outcome was.. I do know a young woman who had her spleen removed last year, and shes been fine since, shes even a few months pregnant. now . Think she has to always take medication tho? Hopefully you can some more reassuring replies.. Thinking of you and sending positive healing thoughts to Crumpet.. ps.. i found that fb comment about the persons dog's spleen, his dog did have to have it removed, has been doing ok since, but was waiting on results .. I feel so lucky that I didn't agree with my local vet to just bring her home and monitor her overnight - I would have panicked if something had happened in the middle of the night being so far from the specialists. kelpiecuddles Posted August 28, 2013 Share Posted August 28, 2013 I haven't had a spleen for nearly 14 years now :) Humans and dogs live well without a spleen, it's a useful but not compulsory part of our anatomy LOL. Basically it is part of the immune system, the result of not having it can make you more prone to infections, especially bacterial ones, which means vaccinations are even more important. Apart from that it's not a huge deal really! Jules3cavs that medication would be a long term antibiotic, generally recommended for the first year or two after splenectomy. Hopefully she can come home tomorrow or the next day all going well. Fingers crossed for a good outcome when the results come in. Fed her a small dinner and she's done a huge wee ( no blood - all yellow again ) Path results were not yet in when we left the specialists so they will phone me with those. She looks so much brighter than a few days ago. They kept her in for the second night because she wouldn't eat - not even Roast Chicken and she's never fussy with her food. In the end they left a bowl in with her and went around the corner to watch and she scoffed the lot. Just got to keep her quiet - so she'll be attached to me on a leash when she' s up and moving - no stairs so I'll have to carry her ( i've got 4 stairs to the back yard ) and no dog park for 10 days until she goes back for a check up. So, alls well for now - It's so good to have her home - Shabby has been running from the back yard to the front door for the last 2 days looking for her but Hoover didn't even notice that she was gone.
