Dog Very Spooked After Laying New Turf & Or Using Blood & Bone

Okay 2 days ago we laid new turf.

We had both our Rottweillers male & female behind a fenced of area nowhere near the turf laying area.

Yesterday we treated the turf with Blood & Bone (pet Friendly type)

Now this morning when I have gone to let the pair out the female ran straight into the grass and fired up by parking at it for a few seconds & then was fine.

However our 18 month old male wouldn't even come out into the yard. Finally I took him thru the other exit and into the house where he jumped onto my bed and stayed there until it was time to take the kids to school.

I leashed him and took him out to the car no problem at all.

When we got back he didn't want to get out. Finally after dragging him out and started walking into our front yard he stopped and became very weary.

I literally had to drag him into the house to the back door.

I say there with him so he was assured it was ok. Then I opened the back door and tried to put him outside but the poor boy was that terrified he just peed all over the place :(

At the point I stopped forcing him out and have kept him inside ever since. He doesn't want to move off my bed not even able to coax him with mince meat (his all time fav treat)

My 3 yr old female is fine out there and hasn't arked up at the grass since. She's walking around as normal.

The wind even blows and he is freaking out.

No idea what's going on ????

I love my dogs dearly & not knowing what's done this is really upsetting me :(

Nobody has miss treated him while behind the fenced off area and late lastnight he was a little scared of something and I thought it wasn't anything to worry about as he was being taken from his yard and put in another area he might just be worried or something so I'd taken him over to the park and he was fine. Bug today its a total different story.

Anyone who can give me any advice I'd be so very greatful.

I've called RSPCA & 2 local vets and the can't assist as its not health or injury related. They said best to contact a behavioural specialist.

Before I do that thought I'd like to see if anyone has ever experienced anything similar with their Compainon furry friends.

Cheers Lee

Breathe! :)

it is possibly the smell of the blood & bone. water, water, water to get rid of most of it .... do not drag the dogs ... and if your boy is really stressed , then just take him elsewhere on your property for a day or so to let him calm down, let him approach it on his terms .

perhaps tomorrow just go out there with food, the dogs' beds etc .. and see if that helps, without making a fuss :)

Relax - your dog will be picking up on your anxiety, too, don't forget ;)

I had a Samoyed that would lose it big time whenever we used a certain 'scentless' bug spray.

He wouldn't come anywhere near the spot it had been sprayed or the person who used the product for a day at least.

First few times it happened we thought there was something seriously wrong with him but as time wore on we worked it out.

Act like everything is normal and give your boy time to get used to it all. If he's anything like my lad he will get over it soon enough.

Sorry not to have anything helpful to say, but I sure wish mine were terrified of the stuff. They regard blood and bone (any sort) as a big sign that says 'dig here'. One year I planted a couple hundred bulbs and the dogs came along and dug every single one of them up.

I don't have any experience on the matter but keep calm and show him that there is nothing to be afraid of, dogs pickup on our own feelings quicker than we even know we are feeling them. if your anxious he will pick that up.

if its nice weather maybe get a deck chair and sit out there with a book for a while with a door open so he can see you and know that its all ok
