Rose Hip Vital

I am almost out of the first batch of Rose Hip Vital Canine that I bought & I am going to try the human form of powder this time instead, as someone has told me it works out a lot cheaper & they suspect the canine one may have artificial colouring in it. I think I got it at a good price of $46.95 including postage form this Online Chemist for 125grams. They also have the capsules...250 for the same price including postage. Has anybody made the conversion of the canine to the human. At present I am feeding 1&1/2 scoops of the canine powder. Is the human one more concentrated than the canine

No the human and the dog version are identical except for the texture. There was information contained in the other thread re dosage using the capsules. I think from memory its 5 capsules is the equivalent of 1 scoop.

If the human one & the dog one are exactly the same, then according to the instructions as per the canine version, for a 15 to 30 kg dog the initial daily doseage of 4 X 2.5g scoops, would equal 20 human capsules  & then 10 human capsules (2 scoops) daily as the maintenance dose. I only have the dog one in front of me, as I havn't recieved my human one yet, that is why I am asking. The canine version contains 1000g/per kg rosehip powder. powder. A friend who has her Koolie now on a maintenance dose, gives her 2 capsules a day.

Thanks Jules for the link. I just had a peek & the 250 capsules now are $44.99 plus $8.95 postage & the powder is $39.99 plus $8.95 postage.

Thanks Ness...I just checked it out. It seems very excessive though for a 18 kilo dog to give it double (10 capsules) for MD than what an 80 kilo person would have (5 capsules) daily. I need to make sure, because if I give my dog more than 1 & 1/2 scoops a day, she gets the runs. :(

If you have any queries Sheena - you can always call the company. I am sure they would be willing to answer your questions. I know there was an answer posted to that somewhere but I have had a look and can't locate it.

I purchased in a shop.

Also got some free rosehip oil!

Stating dose for a human is 10 capsules. Got to say that the amount you have to swallow is putting me off a bit!

Yep...I have sent them an email. Thanks Ness :) Interested in their reply as my friend with the Koolie was told 2 capsules a day MD. Her dog is another success story, as just 2 to 3 months ago, after a really bad shoulder injury, she thought her dog would never, ever compete in agility again. Last weekend was her first trial back & she was just as ferrel as ever  & no after effects of competing

I couldn't swallow that many capsules a day. Why don't you get the powder & sprinkle two scoops on your cornflakes ??

I can't help feeling that people who are giving their dogs the human one may be grossly overdosing their dogs. Why would you start your 18 kilo dog off on 20 capsules a day, twice the amount for a grown human  It just doesn't sound right. When my friend with the Koolie made enquiries she was told 4 capsules a day to start then just two for maintenance. I have emailed the company & they emailed back wanting me to ring them & talk to the manager personally. I have been out all day & havn't got around to it yet, but will let you know what he says, because something just doesn't add up, especially when dogs manufacture their own Vit. C.

Sheena - let me know how you get on with calling them they have always been very helpful with answering questions. I do know the studies required for the Australian Pesticide and Veterinary Medicines Authority required dogs to be tested with up to 5 times the loading dose for an extended period of time.

This is the response I had from the company when I asked for clarification on the the relative dosage question (when it came up in the previous thread):

"Basically the answer is the recommended human and dog dosages are both based on scientific research. For dogs the dose is split into three weight categories because there is such a huge difference between a very small dog and a very large dog. Eg a Chihuahua might weigh about 1.5kg compared to 75kg Great Dane or St Bernard.

We do hear of some people who find a higher dosage is what they need and we also hear from some people who find a smaller than recommended dose is enough for their dog. Ideally the recommended dose should be followed for maximum benefit."

Essentially each dog/person is different though and I do know some people who use less then the prescribed amount and still have the same results. Kenz on the other hand still gets more then the prescribed maintenance dose for her size each day as that is what she seems to need.

Ah well I am sure they will answer your questions - there isn't much vitamin C present in each scoop - that was already answered in the previous thread - certainly not really any different to the amount of vitamin C you will probably find added to other foods especially if you feed a premium dry food.

I know you use to feed BlackHawk and that contains Calcium Ascorbate which is a vitamin C supplement.

I rang them up & yes, you do give the dogs twice the human amount. Something to do with them absorbing the Vit C much quicker & because they are more active. So she said it is far more cost effective to buy the Canine Version 500g rather than give the human one.

ETA...humans can use the canine powder as well...according to their facebook page.

Rose Hip Vital Canine 500g for $60.00 plus $8.00 postage. I just bought some off this guy, to replenish the dog & will keep the human one for myself. I was surprised that the powder tasted quite good sprinkled on my cereal :)
