The Border Mail - Reports Of Dog Thefts Are A Hoax

Yep and it's great that the articles are making the papers trying to dispel the myth. Unfortunately, as we've seen on this very forum, people seem to want to cling very strongly to these hoaxes, despite no evidence that it is actually occurring. It's a shame because it not only hurts the owners of missing dogs but it hurts the dogs themselves.

Sorry, but that doesn't cut the mustard - Straya is a big place, the Border Mail covers a small corner.

I don't believe that zillions of dogs are being stolen, but some are, and I think it is foolish for people to think they aren't. Actually, dogs have always been stolen, facebook both tells lies about it, and puts it in your face.

Good to know no dogs are being used for fights in the circulation area of the Border Mail.

Do I need to say again that:

Missing dogs does not necessarily mean stolen.

Confirmed Stolen dogs does not necessarily mean dog fighting.

Yes, dogs are stolen.

Yes, dogfighting happens.

But to make the leap that most people do with no evidence on such a large scale(from 'missing' to 'dog fighting') is unfair to the dog owners, the community and the dogs themselves.

That's pretty much it in a nutshell.

Nothing is black and white, all outcomes have to be viewed with a sensible eye, and having the police finally giving a crap about missing dogs is a nice change.

btw

I'm old enough to remember that whenever a cat or fluffy dog went missing, they weren't running off or being stolen... it was most absolutely definitely because they were being turned into fashion furs or takeaway food. :o Urban myths tend to snowball until people move on to the next one.

I think it would be a wise move to advise owners of missing dogs to visit their local pounds to make sure their dogs aren't there BEFORE jumping to the conclusion that they have been stolen for any reason.

All this hype may actually lead people to not even think that their dog might just have escaped and is waiting for them to collect from the pound...
