grizabella
A few pictures from Oregon Zoo in Portland. It was a dreary day and there weren't many visitors. A bit dark for photos! I was absolutely entranced by the lion cubs. The North American section of the zoo was superb, and it was pretty cool to see some amazing species that aren't seen in Australian zoos. T. He's a bit special. :) He had very little social experience before he arrived at Monarto, so it's very impressive that he managed to become the alpha male over the three other guys who grew up in much larger social groups. He's such a fantastic alpha male too. You ought to come and visit him sometime!
tdierikx
With our chimp group at Taronga, Lubutu is the alpha because he's the most politically correct of the boys... the girls prefer his style of leadership as opposed to the chest thumping and testosterone charged displays of the other boys. Considering that Lubutu also became alpha at 8 years of age, and has held the position for some 14 years, methinks he must be doing something right, yes? Is Tsotsi's style of leadership similar to Lubutu's? He looks more of a gentle soul than one ready to impose himself physically to make a point. T. grizabella
Tsotsi's formed a very good relationship with Zombi (the most dominant female) and her allies (including Zwala, who passed away, so there were some challenges to Tsotsi's position once she was gone), as well as the previous alpha male, Boyd. He still doesn't quite seem to know what he's doing every now and then, but he's a good guy- and less disruptive than the likes of Gombe!

Lubutu used to run to Lulu after he'd settled a dispute, and she'd give him a cuddle and all would be fine with the world again. After Lulu passed, poor Lubutu now goes to Lisa, who is not quite the same with her support - but she seems to be taking on the role reluctantly... lol! T.
