tdierikx
Am SO loving the Meerkat! That deserves a big print, a nice frame, and hanging on the wall in pride of place... WOW! As for slimy fingerprints on the glass/perspex - if they are on the outside - I carry a small towel for wiping them off... *grin* T.
grizabella
Love the photos (especially the chimp ones, no surprises there)! Glad you had such a nice day for it. :)
Ozstar
Thanks T, that one is my favourite to, oh and thanks for the tip about the towel. There was 2 schools arrive at the Chimp enclosure just before I did, oh course Zuri was really "hamming" it up for the kids but I could not get close enough to take advantage of her antics. She certainly loves a big crowd. Thanks Grizabella, next time I am going to try and get there just on opening as most of the animals like to sleep in the middle of the day lol Leanne
tdierikx
I'm sure that baby chimps understand full well that people are there to see THEM... and play to the crowds like little professionals. Our (Taronga) current 10 month old fellow Fumo is a complete crack up when he knows that people are watching him... and I'm sure he's learned it from his babysitter Sule (6), who is notorious for playing to the crowds too. It will be interesting to see how the latest arrival, little Sudi, shapes up over the coming months. If Shiba lets Sule help babysit like Kuma has with Fumo, I think we may have a good chance of ending up with another well adjusted young chimp... if not, who knows? Hey grizabella - I'm starting to think that Fumo's daddy might be Shikamoo... but we have to wait for a DNA test to be sure. Just something I've noticed about interactions, general looks, etc over the past 10 months... Sudi looks like he might be Shabani's offspring... errr! Even the keepers are saying that's what they think... he's not the prettiest little thing, and has other features in common with Shabani. Of course, that would make his brother his daddy... get out the banjos... lol! T.

tdierikx
Gorgeous! What's the story with Zuri's little bald spot? T.
grizabella
I expect it's from overgrooming from mum, her bald spot's actually gotten smaller. Zombi herself used to have a similar hairdo.
tdierikx
Ahhh... Sembe at Taronga has one on her arm from over-grooming... although sometimes it's Sembe doing the plucking herself... Funny thing I realised the other day... Sembe is notorious for having tantrums... and Shabani throws them too, just not as frequently... and Samaki likes to throw his weight around displaying. None of them are overly inclined to be fully part of the troop (for want of a better way of putting it). ... I wonder how little Sudi will fare? I'm hoping that Shiba may allow Sule to help with some babysitting duties with Sudi... dog knows he's done a cracker job with little Fumo - and Sule is probably the most politically savvy young chimp we have... everyone seems to like him. I think that some day Sule may become the alpha male of Taronga's troop... T.

Ozstar
Great photos Grizabella, I love the way Boyd plays with Zuri. I finally made it the Adelaide Zoo on Monday, found great parking out the back (never knew it was there lol) and was there on opening. The light going from shade to dappled to full sun certainly tested my manual skins and was mentally drained after a couple hours from constantly checking and changing my settings. certainly a great place to learn and practice getting your exposure correct Will upoad over a few post as narrowing down over 400 photos is so hard :D Leanne this is Puspa and after 3 years of being at the Zoo has finally decided to venture outside this past week :) this gorgeous Mandrill was so happy showing off for me

Ozstar
Quote from the Adelaide Zoo "It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of our Sumatran Orangutan Karta’s infant. The exact cause of death is unknown at this time, however initial observations indicate the infant was stillborn. We are extremely saddened by the loss and ask for your support and understanding during this difficult time. Once a full veterinary investigation is performed we will share the findings with you. Karta and Kluet’s carers advise they are in good health and will continue to assist them throughout their recovery and mourning period. The pair will remain in their night quarters until further notice." RIP Baby, such sad news Leanne
tdierikx
So sad... Condolences to the keepers who were so looking forward to a healthy little one. T.
grizabella
Terribly sad, it seems really unfair after all the work that has gone into giving Karta this opportunity. So awful for Kluet, Karta and their caregivers. Edited November 27, 2014 by grizabella
