I love my zoo membership and wish I was closer to Monarto to visit it more. I love the zoo for practicing with different settings as there are so many different subjects and in Adelaide Zoo you have the beautiful gardens as well.

I'd definitely recommend getting a zoo membership, especially if you live near Monarto. I find photographing animals at the zoo to be a lot of fun, there are definitely challenges (like mucky, reflecty glass- grrr!) but it's always enjoyable.

It has been a few years since I have been to the Adelaide Zoo, thought I got some great photos on my old point and shoot, can't wait to go back with my new camera. Might join up at the end of July early August to make the most out of my membership as I hate the cold and rarely leave the house :)

What lens do you all find the best to use. I only have the kit zoom lens at the moment but am hoping to purchase a better lens in a couple months.

I use a 100-400mm lens for my Zoo photos mostly nowadays, but my 18-270 used to do the job admirably also. When I had my 450D, I only used the 55-250mm kit lens and it did a nice job too.

I'd go with your kit zoom lens and see how you go... you may be pleasantly surprised at what a decent job it does.

The only reason I splurged on the 100-400mm lens was the fact that I am going to the zoos every weekend, and it seemed like a good investment because it was going to get a LOT of use. I certainly couldn't justify the $1800 price tag otherwise.

If you need a bit more reach than the kit zoom, you could look into the 70-300mm lenses available out there... or look at the Tamron 18-270 for the best bang for buck...

I have a 70 - 200 f2.8 I would like a big more reach for some enclosures and a few times at Monarto I have found 70 not wide enough but that is rare - mostly it is length I want. I still find I can get what I want though, it just means cropping.

I had a lovely visit to see Adelaide Zoo's beautiful orangutans today, both of them came right up to the window (only the second time I've ever seen them come right up). Kluet looks huge up close!

This was as far as I could zoom out- like I said, they were really close! Such a treat for me. :)

I'm so chuffed with this shot!

Unfortunate glare on the glass, unavoidable due to other visitors not staying still :p

Beautiful shots Grizabella

When shooting through the glass/Perspex do you put the lens right up to it or do you cover the camera to avoid the glare?

Can't wait for Spring to become a member, if I get a shot half as good as the ones on the pages I will be over the moon :D

They announced on the news tonight that Karta is expecting :cheer:

Haha, it does rather look like Kluet is wearing a wig!

I get as close to the glass as possible, usually I can avoid glare and reflections (or at least the worst of it!) but it can really be a challenge at times.

I'm cautiously excited about Karta's pregnancy, and crossing everything for the happy outcome they deserve! It will be so special of Karta is finally able to raise a baby. :)

Absolutely love the photos in this thread.

Yesterday I bought myself a canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens and today paid my Zoo membership fees

Can't wait to try out my new lens, if the weather is good I might head out to Monarto on the weekend.

Anyone else thinking of going?

I was out at Monarto on Monday. We have a bit of a pattern to our trips now - over to the chimps first while they are still active and interacting with their enrichment/searching for food then on to the bus. We aim to be at the Carnivore platform about half an hour before the talk and do the loop through there. Usually some movement happening as they know the keeper is about or on the way. Then head up onto the platform to catch the action there :)

Finally managed to get out to Monarto last week. The weather was perfect and all the animals where taking full advantage of the sun and sleeping in the shade

managed to get a few photos, shooting through Perspex covered in finger prints is a learning curve :)
