Dr Andrew Dunn

Hi :)

Bit of background ... Lacey was diagnosed with a grade 4 luxating patella , went to see the vet who does all the surgery at my vet clinic and he strongly recommended me go and see Dr Andrew Dunn at the Adelaide Veterinary Specialiast Centre, I have made an appointment to see him tomorrow.

Has anyone been to see Andrew? I hear he is very good and one of the top Specialists in Adelaide.... I guess I am just wanting assurance that he is good and knows what he is doing, I also hope that he can fix Lacey because she isn't quite 3 yet :(

Don't know of him Marg, but sorry to hear that about Lacey.. I have heard of some successful surgeries for luxating patellas. Grade 4 is quite bad isn't it ??

I think theres a member here on DOL that may have gone through that with her Cav, or something similar. Cant remember what her user name is. I do recall her talking about it in the general disussion section.

Just an update:

Lacey had her surgery Tuesday last week... she came through it like a trooper, I picked her up the following day. She is on Tramadol every 8 hours which seems to do well for her.

A couple of times when I have picked her up I must have done it the wrong way because it hurt her :/ she is confined to a pen but mostly my bed  she seems the most comfy there so I don't mind :) she gets her stitches out on Monday but the surgery site is really good, he did a good job.

She still isn't putting any weight on her leg but it takes time so I am not overly worried about it.

Good to hear she came through surgery well. I think I would be a little concerned she wasn't using the leg at all a week post-op but hopefully by the time she has the stitches out she has started to use it again. Is she on an anti-inflam as well as the tramadol?

A comparison Kenz (~13.5kg) was on 6-8 hourly tramadol for the first 11 days post-op fairly hefty dosage 100mg tablets. She was also on 60mg carprofen per day. If she isn't using the leg I was told that is suggestive of pain so to make sure she had enough meds in her system.

Kenz had physio starting at 6 weeks post-op. There is only one physio in the state though and I thought she was still off on maternity leave. Happy to be corrected though because Kenz could use it.

 yes she was out like a space cadet for the first 11 days - seemingly I think the 100mg were a little high and she was a little sensitive. She is on 50mg to have as necessary now though with her on-going issues. Will have fingers crossed she starts using the leg soon.

Good to hear Marg, glad Lacey is on the mend. I would think it will take a while to heal properly. Better it was done while shes still young.

One of my friend's Cav had it done also on both her patellas, but has since got arthritis a few years later which is being managed fairly well.

Joey had been on carprofin but for different reasons.

Keep healing Lacey ! and gentle cuddles from Renae, Miah and me x
