Leah82
I renamed my rescue from Tarrady to Sarah, Tarrady was too long and too difficult to shorten. Sarah came from the Triceratops Cera in The Land Before Time, was initially going to spell it Cera but was told my OH to spell it properly :p And then a few weeks later my brother got a new GF - called Sarah

The Spotted Devil
My Dad likes to tell the story from his jackaroo-ing days of the bloke who called his dog 'Askim'. Apparently it started a few fights at the pub when someone said "what's ya dog's name?"
Chequeredblackdog
I think it doesn't really matter what name you choose, or how long it is, as long as it shortens well. Preferably to one easily said syllable. Some names do, some don't. Pick a couple you like and have a play. I know quite a few dogs that have long 'official' names but there call name on course is very short. Eg. Piccolo become Lo.
Mrs Rusty Bucket
Ah two dogs "askim" and "guess"... Trouble. Pop pop pop - sounds enough like pup pup pup to get most dogs' attention. Of course my dog answers to anything that sounds like a treat hand out. There's quite a few dog owners - you swear their dogs' names were "Treat" "Treat" - "Treaty"... Zug Zug
2 syllables work best for me. And yes, of course they'll be lengthened and shortened and nicknames will get thrown in as well... So I think you wanted girls' names? Asha Amber Bindi Blush ( ok that's only 1 syllable) Crusty Evie Ember Fiver Georgia Gift Heifer (ok perhaps not) Ingot (but could be confused with the 'in' command) Jaffa Lola Lori Mintie Olive Orca Punter Quilty And so it goes on

Lyss
Don't do what I did and call your dog Nova. One day in I realised I will NEVER be able to use the word No. I will one up you and also call another dog Jovi who regulary gets called Jove and I call Nova 'Nove'......my poor confused dogs I have a Jovi, and I am bias but I adore her name. It's unique and easy to say in a hurry! I have a Jove, his name generally shortened to Jo he also gets Jovey or Jobo. Rilla-My-Rilla
By BC's name is Rilla & it carries a good distance ie when I take her up the paddock. I shorten it to Rill & lengthen it to Rillie or Rilla-My-Rilla :-)
