Pawfect
Hi! I'm looking for a hydrotherapy place for dogs. My 8yo small fluffy dog has a cruciate issue which is being managed with meds rather than surgery, but she really favours the one back leg so I think hydrotherapy will help her. We're located in Nunawading/Blackburn area in Eastern suburbs of Melb. TBH I have a fear of driving, so need somewhere as close as possible. I've called Pet Emergency & Specialist Centre in Malvern, but they want $65 per use (unassisted!). She'll need a lot of sessions, so i'm just not able to afford it at that price! She HATES swimming & water, so i'm not sure how she'll go at a general dog pool. TIA!
Pretty Miss Emma
I think Woof Purr Nay in Narre Warren might have hydrotherapy facilities (maybe?!). There is also a practice in Kensington, but that is definitely further than Malvern!
Pawfect
Woof Purr Nay are muuuuuch better price wise ($10 session, 10 for $80!), but it's a pool so I'm not sure she'd stay in it. Might give them a call & see what they say. Thx! :)
ness
Pool swimming is better for cardio but if you need rehab for injury then underwater treadmill is much better but yes unfortunately its not cheap either .
haven
Dogs in Motion used to be at Myuna Farm in Doveton, but I heard they moved. They had a pool, underwater treadmill and a qualified physio. From that link it looks like they are in Moorabin now, although still have services at other locations but not all with hydrotherapy.
Sue & Waldo
Waldo is recovering from a torn muscle and had his first swim at WoofPurnay yesterday. He HATES swimming. He had a life jacket on and was fine. The first 2 laps he tried to get out but I kept swimming him. After 3 groups of 2 laps each he was still trying to get out and clearly knew where the exit was but was happier. The attendant was excellent and took great care of him. To go just a bit off topic-It was hard not to laugh at times though. Poor Waldo just escaped the crate and now his mean mum is doing this to him. Just wish I had a camera. The costs are wrong on the web page. It is $25 for the first swim and then $11 per swim or $88 for the card of 10 swims.
Staff'n'Toller
No pool at Moorabbin, just underwater treadmill. It probably wouldn't suit you as far as driving but over the summer we use Kepala Pet Resort. They have a pool indoors and a solar heated lagoon outside. We book the lagoon for our own private use and the dogs love it as they can walk in and out at their leisure and you can wade in to a certain point yourself. But we take the Monash Freeway to the Tulla Freeway and then on to Diggers Rest. I don't think there's any escaping the Parkville traffic for you. RubyBlue
It seems that the north eastern suburbs are a bit isolated as far as this stuff goes. I've been to woofpurneigh a few times and its great, but its the drive that kills me and the reason I haven't been in ages. With an absence of friends with available pools, I am seriously considering in investing in a decent sized circular pond that I could walk or swim the dogs around in. For my dogs I am looking at something fairly large so am saving up, but for a small dog you could probably manage this quite feasibly. There is a discrete place off Elizabeth st in Doncaster (or Doncaster east) that sells molded plastic ponds that to me certainly seemed suitable. If I was doing this as a form of therapy for my dogs rather than for conditioning then I would be initially consulting a canine physio to make sure that they are doing the correct sort of exercise and are not in fact making the condition worse. If you chose to go down this path then you also would need to be aware of water temp and cleanliness, and depending on the size of the pond potentially a pump and filter. Pawfect
Thanks for the advice everyone. I might book her in with a physio 1st & do some underwater treadmill, then see how we go with WoofPurNay after that. We've actually been considering putting in our own pool (for us), so maybe we could revisit that idea. Edited July 18, 2013 by Pawfect
