The kits i have been looking at come with 2 lens so that should give me plenty to play around with :) I also found some great tutorials on youtube. I have been reading a lot of articles but seeing it helps as well, especially when they compare the same photo but with different settings so it is all starting to sink in. Hopefully we will get a chance to go into a few stores this weekend and check some cameras out. I've been following your thread Nushie, did you end up going to look at cameras & find something that works for you? We had a few bills come in and then rego, so i havent wanted to tempt myself until i have some funds to throw around. Fingers crossed my tax return will cover it! the ones that i have been looking at online and chasing rewiews for are: Nikon D3200 and Canon 600D Both are about the same price (i think about $30 difference) on Kogan. Will still be going and have a look in store somewhere. I just find it hard to compare cameras, not only because i have no idea what i need, but also cause i have no idea of how different stats compare and what they mean in the way of how the photos will look etc. I get confused so easily :) Edited July 2, 2013 by Nushie Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
rubiton Posted July 4, 2013 Share Posted July 4, 2013 Have you looked at www.dpreview.com and excellent resource and it lets you compare cameras. Really things like if it takes 3.5 or 6.5 frames a second or what megapixel it is are not really a concern. I have canon and the Canon 600D does appear to be a nice camera - don't know Nikon so cannot compare. But also think about what type of photography you are interested in developing. I was always going to be looking at horse sports but other may love to try and do landscapes or nature and just be able to get a few action shots as needed. From that it will tell you the type of lenses you may want in the future (and then check the prices of the lenses - you may have to check what the pro lens and the consumer version is of the same lens) and see how the pricing there goes too as once you have the body its the lenses you are locked into in the future if you expand and eventually replace the camera. Nushie Posted July 25, 2013 Author Share Posted July 25, 2013 I did it!! Finally :) Ended up with the Nikon D3200 with the kit lens. Its currently charging!! Now that i have the camera, here is another question for all you keen photographers. The guy said that i should consider a 50mm Prime lens. He said that it was good for portraits and landscapes. Normally i would just play around with the camera and see how i go but i am heading off to Queenstown, New Zealand next Friday and lets face it, there will be plenty of landscapes to be shot. The lens he recommended was about $250 but JB have 15% off all their cameras and lens until Sunday. Do i splurge and get the prime lens? Will i get the use out of it? Can i use it to photograph the dogs and horses? I know it seems weird asking you guys and not the dude at the store who should know his stuff, but i just don't know if i fully trust him to not just tell me what i want to hear so that i spend more $$. huga Posted July 25, 2013 Share Posted July 25, 2013 Get it. Most of us have it, it's the lens that is on my camera 90% of the time. Be aware that it doesn't zoom in and out. Also make sure you grab the AF-S version, as your camera doesn't have the focus motor in the camera body, so needs it in the lenses :) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
tlc Posted July 25, 2013 Share Posted July 25, 2013 Agree with Huga, the 50mm is a great lens and the Nikon version in my opinion is a much better lens that the Canon although the pic quality is on a par. However I don't necessarily agree it is great for landscapes although it will do the job, if your kit lens is wider it would be better for landscapes. Later you may want to get a better flash also. The prime lens has the advantage in lower light and the pictures will be sharper but for landscapes the kit lens you have will be better. Also the kit lens zoom in and out, so better in that you dont have to change lenses all the time and you can use it for portraits also. I think use the one you have to practice lots first. On a side note the sensor in your camera is also known as a crop sensor and is smaller than a full frame. What that means is that the 50mm lens fitted to your camera will actually be about 75mm. So i looked up the 50mm Prime Lens and to get the AF-S version that Huga suggested its about $500. The one the guy recommended was just the AF version so cheaper. Might hold off and just see how i go with the kit lens. If the prime lens isnt really much good for landscapes then i am not in any particular rush to get it before NZ then. I had a quick look at one of those flexible tripods thought that might be useful and they are pretty cheap too. But I don't shoot landscapes. Keep in mind the amount of money that is balanced on top of the tripod, don't get cheap and risk it collapsing or falling over.
