Titre Testing Costs

Recommended Posts

Both my vet in Qld and here in rural Vic were more than happy to set up an account at Vetpath so I could titer. Perhaps ask your vets if they will do the same (so much cheaper).

When I rang the vets I had all this info up on the screen right in front of me (about vetpath ect). I asked to talk to the actual vet rather than the receptionist and still got quoted the above prices.

My vet still insists they need vacc every year. Yes I may consider another vet Steph but there are only 3 vet clinics in my hometown.

Perhaps you could ask if they could take the blood and you could arrange the shipping or something? Not sure if they would ok that but that seems absurd to me!

Maybe call vetpath have an online 'how to register' page and you could offer that to them for their perusal. Haha. No idea! Sorry!

I didn't realise you were short of options, silly me! I should read more thoroughly...

I'll have to check again which lab we went through... But my vet didn't seem familiar at all with the procedure. I ended up paying $250 + $83 for the consultation. It took more than 2 weeks for the results to come back (so I ended up having to board Will at the vet hospital, not the usual kennels)

I'd be keen to find another vet in Sydney who could do that for a more reasonable fee next time (especially as I'm considering getting Penny titre tested too)

Try All Natural Vet Care in Russell Lea. They titre test regularly so I imagine they would be reasonably priced. I haven't asked their prices yet though as mine only recently had the last puppy shot

Thanks Minimax! I'll give them a call. Definitely worth investigating as I would really like to keep vaccinations to a minimum. Will developed a severe myositis shortly after his shots last year and the specialist seems fairly confident that's not just a coincidence :-(

I am in WA and our lab is Vetpath, they just don't want to do it.

That's a whole other issue, I'm coming up against that a bit here too. Of those that care to answer one vet has asked what it was I wanted as he'd never done such a thing.

Wrote him off quick smart.

I wish there was some way I could help you OSo.

Applecross vet hospital here in Perth were really helpful (and cheap at $68). They got the results back from Vetpath within a few days too.

My Pug and I won't be doing obedience :(

My vet and I haven't been able to find a lab that will titre test for Bordetella, Parainfluenza and Hepatitis vaccination status.

I still might have him tested for Distemper and Parvovirus (through Vetpath). I will let you know how much they charge if I do.

Hepatitis is tested in America. Positive titre to distemper has been linked to positive in hepatitis which is why it isnt routinely tested here in aus.

You wont find tests for Bordetella or Parainfluenza because one doesnt exist. And its questionable how long immunity lasts to those vaccines- generally less than 12mths so they would have 'unvaccinated' dogs at obedience all year round. Of course it would be irrelevant due to natural exposure allowing natural immunity.

But dont let science get in the way of silly rules :mad How about doing some flyball with your pug? There has been a fair amount of education within that little group of people re allowing titre tested dogs to participate.

Yep, I know that, and I have tried to tell the secretary at the obedience club that :) And they are the only club around for miles that offers flyball.

After finding out all this information about vaccines and titre testing, I don't understand why some vets are so pro-vaccination.

There is not enough scientific data on herd immunity and titre testing for all vets to feel comfortable. So far there have been studies on yearly vaccination vs no vaccination and triannial vaccination vs no vaccination- but has there been a study on annual vaccination vs triannial. Do we have enough dogs maintaining good levels of immunity to keep Distemper from popping up again? There are lots of questions that haven't been thought of yet, let alone tested and unfortunately there is not a lot of money to do this testing. Nor do we have great systems in place to pool this information currently. So without the science there are vets that genuinely cant in good conscience recommend anything other than annual vaccination- the big sticking factor for me is that a vet should be able to have a rational conversation and say why they are making that recommendation based on science, or lack there of. There is no excuse for the ones that havent questioned what they are doing and refuse to talk to clients about their options.

PS that SUCKS about flyball :(

Perhaps you could start your own get togethers in the mean time? Can you rent the equippment or know someone clever with carpentry?

It sucks, It truly sucks. We've just had to ditch daycare, find a new obedience club and even a new hydrobather if we go down that route. That's before even finding a vet to do it. Ridiculous!

You could still train him by yourself and enter trials? I was never asked for any proof of vaccinations when entering trials...

Thanks very much but I wouldn't have a clue how to do that

I just queried my vet regarding the cost to titre testing after I found out they offer it. Unfortunately, they're one of the vets who send he bloods away to America so I'll be looking at the $250 mark per test per dog. :(

Luckily I have a vet I've just discovered who offer in house titre testing so I'm planning to ring on Monday and ask what they charge and what they test for. Am so bummed about my regular vets because I really like them.

FFS, about the YEARLY vs triennial vaccs...

Does the vet that wants yearly vaccs know better than the AVA and Au Govt?

http://www.apvma.gov.au/use_safely/vaccination.php

  • the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) recently (June 2009) released an updated policy and guidelines on vaccination of dogs and cats which notes that

The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) believes that in most cases, core vaccines need not be administered any more frequently than triennially and that even less frequent vaccination may be considered appropriate if an individual animal’s circumstances warrant it. However, local factors may dictate more frequent vaccination scheduling.

and highlights the importance of informed consent by pet owners. The APVMA supports the AVA’s vaccination policy.

  • The AVA’s policy refers to the World Small Animal Veterinary Association’s (WSAVA's) Guidelines for the Vaccination of Dogs and Cats, which state that

Vaccines should not be given needlessly. Core vaccines should not be given any more frequently than every three years after the 12-month booster injection following the puppy/kitten series

That infos more than 3 years old, too.
