Peeing Inside For First Time In 11 Years

 Share

Recommended Posts

We moved house 3 weeks ago. When the previous owners took all their furniture, I noticed that the cream carpet in the lounge/dining area was full of what looked like dog pee stains despite the lady having told me she'd had the carpets cleaned (I'm guessing her dog even cocked his leg on the curtains as there are pee stains in the shape of the closed curtain).

Now, Casper has not peed inside since he was 6 months old but he has now started peeing on this carpet. He has done it a couple of times and I thought it's probably because he can smell the other dog (I'm sure the previous dog peed on the carpet after it had been cleaned). I spent many hours yesterday washing the carpet with my carpet shampooer, it looked so much cleaner though some of the stains remain. This morning there was a new puddle on it despite the sliding door to the garden being open so he could go out.

Is he marking his territory still or is he getting lost in this bigger house? I don't think it's incontinence (due to his age) as he only pees on that spot.

How do I stop this? I don't like scolding him, he's an old boy who has had a stressful year. Also, how do I get rid of the stains that remain? I am hoping to replace the carpet with floorboards in the near future but I have to stop this behaviour now. The only thing I can think of is to block that part of the house from him.

Your suggestions would be welcome, as always!

Yes, he's peeing on top of the other dog's pee scent.... to show it's his place now.

So.... now to remove both scents which will be leading him back to do it again & again.

I don't know if it'd work, but while you're figuring out a way to do that..... would laying down some thickly folded tarp (the kind you get in KMart), just temporarily hide them from his nose?

Good suggestion about the tarp mita, I'll give it a good clean with vinegar tonight then cover it once it's dry. Thank you!

Don't know if it'd work, tho'! :) Dogs' noses are so supersensitive.

Only other suggestion is to put drops of Nil-Odor, both on the site....& even on top of the tarp. It's highly concentrated... & even a couple of drops knocks any other scent out, by competition. It's available from supermarkets.... comes in very small bottle because it's so concentrated.

Here's the How To Remove Pet Urine & Odours Video & Instructions from the Nil-Odor website. They show how to remove new urine stains as well as old ones. Interestingly, they stress the use of warm water dilution at the start.... before any product is used:

Thanks guys. Will the vinegar not bleach the carpet? Not that it could look much worse. Do you think that might stop him peeing on it?

I've never had a bleaching issue, I use vinegar mixed with water in a spray bottle. You can get expensive commercial ones that do the same thing.

Have you seen the Urine-Off type of products?

http://www.thevetshed.com.au/buy/urine-off-dog-puppy-500ml/URINEOD500

In the case of pets, the problem is compounded because of their territory-marking behaviour and their very acute sense of smell. Even when the urine odour has been rendered imperceptible to humans, animals detect it and are compelled to re-apply their own scent! So once an animal has “gone” in one spot, they frequently return to it again and again, no matter what we do.

But now…there is Urine-Off™. Urine-Off™ contains bacteria and enzymes that were painstakingly isolated and specifically selected for their appetite for "eating" the urine salt crystals in addition to removing the other components of urine. We use a seven step manufacturing process. It costs more to make a product this specialised and this concentrated ... but the results are worth it! Effectively removing these crystals is what distinguishes Urine-Off™ from the other products we've tested.

With the source of the odour AND the stain removed, the problem is solved. Urine-Off™ has a pleasant citrus fragrance and even that disappears when the product dries.

That's the expensive commercial version of what vinegar does ;)

mita, I have some nil-odor, I'll spray some after I've cleaned up with vinegar. I'll have a look at the link you've posted when I get home.

BlackJaq and minimax, even if there is a little bleaching I doubt you'd notice it. It's quite an old carpet which is already sun bleached by the windows. If I ever have to use vinegar on another carpet I would definitely test it first.

CrazyCresties, I'll try the vinegar first since I have stacks of it. If it doesn't do the trick I'll give your suggestion a try.

I soaked up as much as I could on kitchen paper this morning and sprinkled it with bicarb to draw out the moisture. I was getting ready for work so didn't have time to clean it properly. I just hope my dyson doesn't choke on all the bicarb it's been vacuuming lately!

I appreciate the help! If all else fails, I'll just have to block him from going to those rooms.

And specially look at what they said about first going strong on diluting with warm water.... even an old urine mark. Before applying any product. That was news to me ..... and sounds so sensible. I'm glad you asked the question.... I've learned something! :)

I would chuck the carpet out now so the smell will clear from underneath it too. Also block the room off from him for a couple of weeks so he doesn't get into the habit of peeing in there. The longer he does it the harder it is to stop.

Consider a belly band too if it won't distress him too much.

What is a belly band?

A belly band is a strip of stretchy fabric that fits around the dogs tummy & covers the penis. There is a space in it to place a pad in case of accidents.

They are used for dogs that are marking territory or incontinent in the house.

Thanks Christina, as you say, it's becoming a habit for him to pee there. I blocked his access to it until I get a chance to do my white vinegar clean this weekend. I'm hoping to replace the carpet soon though my enthusiasm isn't rubbing off on hubby. At his pace it's not likely to happen as soon as I'd like...of course he's not the one mopping up all this pee either! I'm not going to go down the belly-band route just yet. I would consider it if he was peeing all over the house or if he was incontinent though.
