fluff1234
Hi all I am just wondering how long a puppy is Ok to be confined in a crate when I go out. I will be crate training but live 40 mins from school, I have to go pick up children and drop them of so this can be a 1.5 hr trip and 2 hrs. Is this OK? Pup will be out all day with me in the house and constantly toileted otherwise except between 7.45-9.30 am in the morning and 2pm-4pm evenings. A few days eldest will be home as he is only at uni in the mornings, so will go get him luunch time and he will be home for school pick up, so those days will only be 1.5 hrs whilst I go collect him.. Just wondering what people do with puppies and nipping out? I cannot remember with my last pup, its been so long ago! Weekends will always have people around and I dont work, so days are fine other than these times.. :)
fluff1234
when he is fully immunised, I will be taking him for school pick ups with me, so this is only intially ;)

persephone
oh..and don't forget to train pup to play ALONE ..and to spend time out of your sight doing doggy stuff ! Time spent teaching that now will be VERY worthwhile , with a pup/dog who doesn't fall to pieces when his humans are either behind a door, or a thousand miles away .... :)
fluff1234
Yes we have a half acre, however, I dont want him left outside :) I was hoping this 1.5 hrs-2hrs max would be OK? I am pretty sure my pup int the past was fine for that time span, was just checking :)
fluff1234
I will be giving him time alone in the crate during the day, to get away from me and play :)
LisaCC
You said you will take him with you when he is fully vaccinated. Why not before? He will just be in the car won't he? Surely heaps of strange dogs aren't in your car

LisaCC
Why not? I would say good socialisation to be around heaps of kids
minimax
Training a puppy to be alone is very important, but there is more to crate training than just popping him in and shutting the door. Whether crated or penned, pups are fine alone :)
fluff1234
If I took him to school he would never be alone LOL... I am just wondering if the 2 hrs was too long for him to hold it, thats all :) This would be his alone time too.. so probably good for him? fluff1234
I did look at outside kennels/run, but they are all bottomless, so he could go toilet on the grass, BUT he could dig under! as samoyeds tend to do :)
Rebanne
I will be giving him time alone in the crate during the day, to get away from me and play :) He needs to learn to be alone outside as well. Crates are for resting in, not playing. But yes he will be ok for 2 hrs. But he is a dog and should have time outside so he can do doggy things. moosepup
Nacho gets left in a pen with his crate attached but he's also in the same room as the other dogs. :)
persephone
a couple of hours in a crate he's been trained to enjoy sounds ok .... Outside in a secure pen would be ideal :) he really does need to be out there without an attached human

Justrace
I had a big double play pen set up with the crate inside for when I had to go out for longer periods but didn't want him crated. I just had one side with paper for him to go to the toilet on & his food, water & crate up the other end. I would just give him great things to eat/chew for those periods. sheena
Why not? I would say good socialisation to be around heaps of kids You would most likely find that dogs are not allowed inside the school grounds & therefor, he would have to be left in the car, which of course, is a no no. I wouldn't think a couple of hours in the crate alone would do him any harm providing he is wee'd & poo's before he goes in. Have a bit of a game before & he will most probably sleep the whole time.
