Protein In Egg White

I feed my dogs raw egg yolks & throw the white away as I have always thought there was no goodness in it & that raw egg white can inhibit the absorption of Vit. B. I have just been reading a blog on weight lifting (human) & they were talking about the protein in egg white. Evidentially, over half the egg's protein is in the egg white. So for now on, I will still give them the raw yolk (cause cooking spoils a lot of the goodness) & cook the white. I don't crush up the shell to give to them as I am worried they may be getting too much calcium. They get about 5 eggs a week as well as their dry & a whole turkey neck each a day. The nights they don't get an egg (depends on how the chooks are laying) they get fish or steak with their dry.

Nice to know pavlova is good for me :laugh:

just feed whole raw egg :)

No need to cook the white ... any effect it has is balanced by the yolk .

people looking to enjoy egg, but on strict eating plans will resort to egg white omelettes etc ..no fat , but good protein :)

How can it be balanced by the yolk if it inhibits the absorption of the Vit B in the yolk. Surely without the white, the dog will get more Vit. B absorbed from the yolk than if the raw white was fed as well.

Do your dogs need additional Vitamin B? Intestinal bacteria also synthesis Biotin (Vit b7), usually enough for adequate nutritional requirements.

Advin in egg white binds to Biotin, which is a Vitamin B. If you ONLY feed egg whites over a long period of time the biotin all becomes bound up by the advin and you get a deficiency.

Egg yolk is a rich source of Biotin, meaning that the Advin can still bind to the Biotin but you still have a net gain (or at least no net loss). Thus so long as you dont just feed raw egg whites your never going to end up with a deficiency.

Thanks Jumabaar, I have raised this question before in other threads but no-one has ever given it an answer. Yours is the first answer I have seen about egg whites, that makes sense & explains it.

Damn......& there I was thinking that eating more pavs would build up my biceps & give me some boobs :laugh: All it's going to do is increase my hip size. Evidentially even cooked egg white can inhibit Vit B Absorption to some degree.

My OH lifts weights and used to eat loads of whole eggs. After a cholesterol check he now eats mainly egg whites! :laugh:

That's actually a myth about eggs being a problem with Cholesterol.

Myth: People with high cholesterol should not eat eggs.

Fact: Eggs are not the enemy; they are packed with heart-friendly vitamins.

Remember the 1980s when we started madly whipping up eggwhite omelettes because we were told yolks were bad for our cholesterol levels.

As a result, many an egg yolk ended up down the sink. However, research in more recent decades suggests this was a waste of food.

Investigators from the University of Surrey published their findings on the subject in a British Heart Foundation nutrition bulletin in 2009.

They examined the results of several different studies on eggs and nutrition, coming up with the conclusion that the humble egg did not “contribute significantly” to a person’s cholesterol levels.

I give Miah every so often a raw egg, just the yolk with some of the shell mixed in with her meal.. but every so often i also cook up scrambled eggs (using all of the egg) for all 3 of my Cavs, they love it biggrin.gif

Interesting, he cut out eggs and his cholesterol went down?

Doesn't "contribute significantly" means still contributes, so really if you have high cholesterol you are advised to avoid anything that can contribute to raising it, whether it has a significante affect or minor effect, and focus on things that lower it.

So really, that article confirms that eggs contribute to raising cholesterol :laugh:

I remember seeing a study that was done and they checked a young otherwise healthy young blokes cholesterol, then he was having something insane like 18 whole eggs a day and his cholesterol actually went down a bit.

NOthing wrong with honest to goodness eggs. Just have an egg if you like them
