kelpiecuddles
Just curious which other organisations out there have puppy raisers to take their pups through to trial/training age? I've been talking about what sort of dog we would get when our current girls are eventually no longer with us but we might be looking to travel a bit by then and I don't like the idea of kenneling a pet dog for long periods just to go on holidays. it occurred to me that a puppy being raised would onlt be with us for 12 months or so and we could then travel in between puppies :D Obviously there is also foster care. Thing is, I'm not that big a fan of labradors so just wondering if any other organisations have a similiar system in place?
FalconRange
Customs uses puppy raisers, but the only information I can see says for labs as well. If you live in NSW, NSW police uses puppy raisers too, but they have GSDs and Spaniels as well. Application form here: http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0008/83708/Puppy_Walk_Application_Form.pdf Edit - some information on page 2 here: http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0006/259503/SITREP_News_from_across_the_state.pdf and http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/about_us/structure/specialist_operations/nsw_police_dog_unit/program Edited May 30, 2013 by FalconRange
kelpiecuddles
Thanks for that, unfortunately it looks like I am too far from Sydney by about 80km for the police program(which may be the same as customs but I'll look in to it)
Scarlet
I've seen a standard poodle as a guide dog - maybe ring and ask what pups they are planning.
corvus
Assistance Dogs Australia does, but you do have to be reasonably close to Heathcoate so you can attend regular classes. They also only really raise Labrador and GR puppies. Although to be fair, I was not a Labrador person a few years ago, but after working with a bunch of them during my studies I've become much more appreciative of them. Sharp minds, and some of them seem to have a wonderful sense of fun. Something that might work out better for you is B&B. Most of the ADA dogs in advanced training go to volunteers on weekends and over holiday periods to get them out of the kennels when there are not many trainers around, but some dogs need a bit of a break from training, further socialisation, or are waiting for placement and go on extended B&B for a few weeks or longer. Most of their dogs are retrievers, but recently they've been branching out and getting ex-racing Greyhounds and other dogs from rescue.

mita
For SE Q'lders. The Military Dogs Training Unit at Amberley base, sends their puppies out at 12 weeks of age to live in ordinary pet homes within the community for the socialisation & familiarity that comes with living that lifestyle to the fullest. They're always looking for suitable pet lovers to do this. One of the DOLers did some time back... & she used to post about the experience. Anyone interested .... you'll find the email & phone number to make enquiries, on the RAAF Military Working Dogs' Facebook page. Scroll down to the pic of a cute baby pup, born to a military career at the base. https://www.facebook.com/RAAF.MWD Edited May 31, 2013 by mita
kelpiecuddles
We are on the south coast but aren't necessarily looking for something now, more likely a few years down the track when our current girls are no long er with us(hopefully not for quite a while!)
