Any Ideas? Progressive Paralysis In Puppy

 Share

Recommended Posts

some friends of mine have a litter of greyhound puppies and one seems to be partially paralysed. He appeared to be a perfectly healthy puppy until about 10 days ago. Initially they thought he might have had an injury, he wasn't walking properly. They took him to the vet, he's had lots of spinal xrays and the vet cannot find anything. They've kept him separated from the other puppies and kept him quiet but it's getting worse. He's now to the point of losing awareness of what his hind feet are doing. They're very worried and I said I'd do some asking here.

I've had a brief look at Wobbler syndrome but it seems to be in older dogs and also causes neck pain. They dont think the puppy is in any pain. I think the pup is around 12 weeks old now.

Does anyone have any idea what it might be?

My kelpie became partially paralysed after she ate something she shouldn't have. The vet and us still don't know what she ate, the only suggestion the vet could make was maybe she has eaten a dead bird that was VERY far gone or something along those lines and there was a nasty bacteria that poisoned her system maybe. She recovered on her own after a few days and some time spent on a drip(and about $800 gone out of our bank account LOL)

I've been reading and botulism crossed my mind but I think the puppy hasn't appeared to be sick. He's just getting more and more unsteady. I'm wondering if he has a lesion growing on his spine, although I would have hoped the xrays would pick something like that up.

She never appeared unwell, just unable to stand, we though she might have been bitten by a snake as we were in Vic too so no ticks.

Any chance she ate macadamias? Moose has had back leg paralysis twice from eating them but recovered in a day.

Hope they find a cause Krislin, it sounds very strange :(. :crossfingers:

No, I dont think so. There's no trees here and the owners are pretty strict about what they feed. They dont feed anything unusal.

If it was my dogs it would be a different story, they eat anything they can.

ceroid lipofuscinosis?

just had a very brief scan for this, blindness seems to be one of the sypmtoms, he's not blind.

I don't think CL would show up at such a young age - in most of the breeds who suffer from it it shows up around 12 months at the earliest.

I did wonder about TNS or another autoimmune problem?

Trapped Neutrophil Syndrome. Neutrophils are trapped in the bone marrow instead of being released to fight infections. It is genetic in Border Collies, but I have no idea if it is present in Greyhounds. I just wondered if it could be something like that as it can badly affect the joints and the pup cannot fight off infections due to the lack of neutrophils. Border Collies now have a DNA test for it:-)
