kelpiecuddles
My basset has a spot just above her tail which is quite scaly, almost like psoriasis in texture. If I didn't know better I would say it was a flea allergy but she definately doesn't have fleas, regardless I retreated her with Advantix about 4 days ago and made sure I placed some of it near her tail(since she has a long body). I am now wondering whether it might be a fungal skin infection so off to the vet in the next few days to get it checked out. Before I go though I just wanted to check about antifungals for dogs. I seem to recall that many years ago when I had an animal that needed a fungal infection treated I got the first tube from the vet at great cost but was able to get exactly the same thing from the chemist at a much lower price. Can anyone tell me which one it was because I'm doing my best to keep costs down at the moment and if the vet advises this treatment for her I will get the equivilent from the chemist instead. Any other thoughts on what it might be greatly appreciated, it seems to be fairly itchy.
*kirty*
Canestan cream is fine for dogs. Betadine is also an antifungal.
kelpiecuddles
I have both and also Cetrigen spray. Is it worth trying one of those maybe for a week before taking her to the vet? If it was something life threatening or seriously upsetting her I'd obviously be there straight away but this is something that's been there off and on in the past and has only just recently gotten worse so it's not a vet rush job if you know what i mean... Come to think of it I think I sprayed Cetrigen on it once before but I can't remember whether it help
minimax
I use canesten on my dogs when I suspect something fungal, and wait a few weeks if it's not bothering them too much or if it's not getting worse, because it can take a few weeks to start to show a real improvement if the canesten is helping. kelpiecuddles
I've just pulled it out and it's Daktarin, anyone know if that's the same as Canestan? How often do you apply it minimax and is it a problem if she licks it or do i need to try to stop her? kelpiecuddles
Just googled and it's not the same. Active ingredient of Daktarin is miconazole, any thoughts on this brand? Otherwise I can go and get some canestan from the chemist

I usually start out three times a day, applying liberally/rubbing it in but also leaving a layer to soak in, but if it's in an area that she can lick either cover it with a loose dressing or put it on before bed or before dinner, when she's distracted and less likely to notice it? kelpiecuddles
Ok, I'm not sure how I'll go covering it as it's in pretty much the easiest spot for her to lick. She's sleeping in front of me right now so I'll; put some on and see if she'll leave it alone or whether I need to work something out to keep her away from it. Erny
Calendula Tea. Use it frequently (e.g. a few times a day) in the first instance. Ease back to just a couple of times then once a day as the skin improves. If you don't see any improvement whatsoever in the first few days then perhaps something else is needed, or perhaps it is not a fungal issue. It won't matter to your dog if she licks it as it is ok (and good) to ingest. Although keeping her from it will help it do its work on the skin. kelpiecuddles
She's had a bit of a lick at it but not because of the cream I don't think, she's not licking it any more than she already was. Where does one find calendula tea? I doubt I would be able to get it local, probably need to go to the next big town.
Erny
Go HERE . They sell it on-line. I think Kerrie is in NSW, but not sure where (can't put my hand on her details atm). It's great stuff and I wouldn't be without it in my pantry 'on the ready' for so many things :). Edited May 22, 2013 by Erny

It's great stuff and I wouldn't be without it in my pantry 'on the ready' for so many things :). I was looking at the Natural Pet Store site this morning Erny and I see that they have Calendula Flowers, I dont know if the price is comparable to where you get your flowers from but it may be of interest to other DOlers. (I bought some dehydrated FoodiePooch Real Mischief with Chicken for forgetting-to-take-their-dinner-out-of-the-freezer emergencies and some Virgin Cold Pressed Coconut Oil) The Calendula flower link is here--> My link
trinabean
Kelpiecuddles I feel like I just about live at the dermatology vet clinic due to my dog's allergies. Last time Bruno had a suspected fungal infection, the vet had us applying 'Lamisil' cream twice daily to the area (while we waited on pathology results). I bought the first tube from the vet and then realized it was just a human tinea cream. I bought it from the chemist after that, much cheaper. The active ingredient is Terbinafine. :)
