corie Posted May 9, 2013 Share Posted May 9, 2013 Before I start, I will say that this is more of a human problem, than a puppy one :p So I believe I've found the perfect (and perfectly priced, saving me $50) adult-sized crate I'll partition for my puppy, except I'm expecting to wait around a month after puppy arrives before the crate gets shipped to my doorstep. This first month is of course crucial for crate training, house training and such. My question is, has anyone experimented with any household items I could (with a bit of creativity) fashion into a temporary crate that have proven to be a good substitute? Large plastic tubs, puppy pen walls adjusted to fit around a doggy bed, etc. Or should I just buy a crate I can use immediately? Just wanted to see if anyone had to think out of the box (pun intended) and have it work for them before, temporarily. A wire one will be tough enough to stand up to pretty much any puppy stuff and you can put a canvas cover on it to make it look nicer. I trained straight into a large soft crate(kelpie) but she was carefully picked as the quietest of the litter and hasn't ever really had a destructive bone in her body. Pretty standard, except for the price :D I've looked at the soft crates too, but I'm not 100% it'll stand up to the treatment it's likely to get. And garage sales! Good idea. He could walk straight through the bars of the play pen :laugh: we ended up having to put clear plastic through the bars - I wanted him to be able to see. Have you already ordered the crate & it's just a matter of waiting for it to arrive? I got mine second hand and had it all set up ready before he arrived. Depending on where you are someone may suggest a good place that sells crates ,dog shows are often great places to buy them & cheap & you can see the quality. My first crate is over 30 yrs old & still being used. Our breeder just notified us that she thinks that there is another family more suited to the pup that we had chosen from the litter, so I'll have plenty of time to wait for the original crate to arrive, and not have to resort to anything weird/wonderful in the meantime. I know that ideally, I would have had the crate prepared beforehand, but sometimes you get ahead of yourself Be careful ,i have wire crates & the good ones are worth every cent & last years ,bad/cheap ones just aren't worth the money & sometimes not safe . Depending on where you are someone may suggest a good place that sells crates ,dog shows are often great places to buy them & cheap & you can see the quality. That must be disappointing, when you have picked out your new companion ....
