Plastic Shell Type Bed Sizing

 Share

Recommended Posts

It's getting colder and my girls have proven themselves well behaved to sleep in the main part of the house where the heater is so I want to get them a couple of beds but I'm feeling a little lost on sizing. I need one for a kelpie and one for a smallish basset hound. The kelpie really curls up when she sleeps, the basset curls too but not as tightly.

If you have one sort of like this and a similiar sized dog could you tell me how big your bed is:

Any reccs for a cheap supplier are also appreciated as i'm on a tight budget at the moment. They don't have to come with a cushion, I can sew one if needed.

While I'm at it I'd love to hear from anyone who has a short legged dog who won't get on a hammock bed as far as other types of beds they have had success with, particularly if these ones have worked. At the moment she just sleeps on a cushion mat on the floor despite us having two lovely hammock beds!

Oh its nice to have another basset owner posting. My fellow is only three quarter size as well but has no trouble with hammock beds. He can curl up on most medium size beds just fine. We have lots of beds, but as you can see the from my sig pic the lounge gets more use than any beds. The bed you linked too would be heaps big enough for my chap.

My boy has decided he wants to sleep outside at night time. (He has a kennel) I think its too cold here for that so am trying to find winter jammies for him, short fat stumpy legs and long deep chested bodies mean its almost impossible.

I'm sure she can get on the hammock bed(despite me trying to stop her she takes a flying leap into the back of our outlander if I'm not holding on to her) but for some reason she just refuses. As weird as it sounds I'm actually a little worried that she might not be willing to step in to one of these even, she's a bit precious LOL

I did find these: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Soft-Warm-Pet-Dog-Cat-Bed-Kennel-Cushion-Cozy-Cage-Nest-Pad-mat-10-Size-Option-/310658987690?pt=AU_Pet_Supplies&var=&hash=item4854b7f6aa which will cost me all of $8.30 including postage for a 70cm one, I'm sure they are really thin but I figured I could just make a thicker mat for them, being soft she might be less likely to baulk at stepping in to it and then I could progress her on to the hard plastic one.

I'm planning to get my butt into gear a come up with a good jumper design for Josie, probably out of polarfleece. Once I get it right I'll send you a pic and if you want one I can throw one together for you :)

k.c why not start with cardboard boxes? if you ask around some stores ..it is amazing the shapes/sizes/strengths you may find!!!

Easily cut/painted /and cheap as . Blankets etc inside ..and there you have it :) The dogs don't care!!

I want something a little more robust as I have three children who are a little bit cardboard box obsessed. If the dogs bed was made of a cardboard box she'd probably have three children sitting in it with her pertending to be in a bus LOL (She would be the driver of course!) The basset wouldn't mind that but the kelpie is getting old and cranky and less tolerant of kids climbing around her. Apart from that i'd like to be able to stack them neatly or stuff them in a cupboard when they aren't using them. So the dogs don't care but for practical and aesthetic reasons I do :p

I agree, I'm all for trying out cardboard boxes.

and you can write corny messages of love all over them too! :o

That box has long since died but they loved it. I actually had 2 but the whippets who couldn't fit in used to queue outside waiting for one to leave so they could get inside.

If you're not keen on having a cardboard box as part of the decor you can cover it with a blanket so they have to enter via a curtain (blanket) over the entrance. They love it even more because it's private.

Penny used to get inside and when an unsuspecting whippet walked by she'd shoot her head out snapping like a moray eel and give them a good scare.

My Border Collie girl sleeps in one of these. We won it at a dog show, so didn't have any choice of size, but it is

104 x 70 & she loves it. She could have probably been just as comfortable in the next size down. It has her soft matress & snuggle rugs in it. Very hard to get her out of bed in the mornings, & I imagine even harder, when her self-warming crate mat comes from Cleanrun

The cardboard box idea looks very snug & cute, but wouldn't last long with my two

BJ you do know that I am making custom coats and pj's this year don't you? All monies go to Peiradise - Shar Pei Rescue Qld. Info is in the Commercial Marketplace thread. I have no probs adjusting patterns (pei are hardly standard in the neck and leg areas) and would love to make your boy something. I'd give you a price before you commit of course but prices are ranging from $15 (smaller dogs) to $35 (giant breeds). Lots of pattern, style and colour options.

Kelpiecuddles have you thought of making your own fleece beds? If you have dogs that like to snuggle I find a round shape better - smaller inner circle than the outer and the dogs kind of sink in to it and keep quite warm. There are also no sew options which I could find you a pic of and give you a link to instructions. I think they are very cute, cost effective, machine washable AND dry pretty quick!

Kelpiecuddles, I think I remember saying you we're near Nowra on the south coast?

If so the shop across from Coles in town sell the hard Plastic shells and heaps of other dog beds. I can't remember the name of the shop sorry but it's one of those shops that sells bits and pieces of everything.

And SAMs Warehouse in Shellharbour has a massive range of dog beds including the hard shell ones.

Love the cardboard box idea! I use them for the cats in winter but hadn't thought about them for the dogs but now they are older I will give them a go.

I remember my old cattle dog squishing into a box I had left outside ready to put into the recycling - they can get into small areas! It would also contain the dog hair!

The cheap variety stores sell these beds. The large size, as shown in your link, cost me $20 & the smallest size $10 at Cheap as Chips. Shop around at Sams, Go Lo, deals direct & any of the other cheap variety places. They sell them everywhere.

I got the big size as mine all jump in together when its cold. Small size was for kittens.

Large would be fine as you need a cushion or something in there, the plastic is cold.
