Cocker Spaniel Needs Help

Recommended Posts

I have had an enquiry from a family who are needing help in rehoming their Cocker Spaniel, he has anxiety issues and will need a home where there is someone home for most of the day or another dog, he just isn't coping being alone all day.

He is 17 months old and is currently on “Lovan” for anxiety. He is collar sensitive and the owners pull his collar  when they want to get him out of the garden beds or away from anywhere really, he will react, have told them to have him on a short lead and use that.

He needs to be in a better environment where he will get all the training and companionship he needs he is still a pup and has just been in a backyard with nothing to keep him occupied, I am hoping a cocker person could help him or anyone really who knows what they are doing, he just needs a safe place to get what he needs.

Can anyone steer me in the direction of a Cocker rescue or at the least someone who may be able to help.

I think if he was in a different environment with another dog for company this would help him immensely and so any help you can give in finding this would be greatly appreciated

I knew I shouldn't have looked. Those damn cocker eyes

I will send you a PM of someone who may be able to help this poor boy. Gosh, I hope someone can help him - it sounds like he could do with some more understanding.

Certainly sounds like it, Tintin :(. And now that he is with DAS, he will get it.

If that's a purebred Cocker Spaniel, I'll eat my hat. Wrong head, wrong body shape, wrong feet...

My guess would be Cocker/CKCS and no doubt from one of our local puppy farmers. Hall Markets sourced eprhaps.

That aside, sounds like a perfect case of the wrong dog in the wrong home and now the poor bugger has a heap of baggage to take to the next one.

I hope he gets both the home and the help he deserves. Needs to be inside with family for a start.

Interesting to note the time the dog was surrendered... the exact same time as keetamouse was posting here for help with him...

Obviously the owners weren't too willing to take on board the advice given and hold him until someone could be found to avoid him going to an even higher stress place than the one he was already in... *sigh*

The pound have him as exactly that :) A lovely boy - hope he finds a suitable home this time who will have him inside. They need to know his issues up front though.

I hope the owners advised the pound that he bites.

Where does it say he bites?

In the initial post about him which was quickly deleted. Keetamouse copied and pasted the owners email to her - which clearly stated if you grab him by the collar he will turn and bite you. I have a dog which will do the same so I am not saying the dog should be written off but I do think full disclosure should have been given both here and at the pound.

Oh I see. The owners were probably total tools and hurt him.

I am quite sure that DAS will be assessing this dog and I think from Keetamouse's post one could assume that pulling on the collar resulted in the dog attempting to bite - I know I did.

Frankly, if I had a dog that something triggered a reaction like that, I would be straight off to the vet to check the dog over to ensure that the dog didn't have a wound or a tender spot.

Now the dog is out of the hands of people with little understanding (only going on what has been posted), I hope he will thrive.

ETA: Even if the a dog reacted like that and there wasn't anything obvious causing it, why would you continute to do that to the dog. Find another way of getting him out of the garden. Dogs are human too - why provoke and push all the wrong buttons. :D :D :D

There's a great saying>

'If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always got.'

Very handy when persuading someone to shift to another way

I am so pissed off at them after the time I have spent talking to them and giving them tips to make him a bit more comfortable so I can have a bit of time to hunt around for some where for him to go, they go and do this and not even having the courtesy to let me know, I don't know why I bother sometimes I will email the lady.

I just hope his anxiety issues don't get worse. I will let DAS know what his history is.

I feel your frustration. The real danger is, of course, that they'll blame the dog for what happened and go right out and get another. :(

Same Maree, I've been ringing this lady for months. She rings and wants to surrender so I ask for more info then she says oh its ok now. Then she rang again last week so I've been leaving messages since Sunday.

my boy bart did this when I first got him. The burst eardrums and chronic ear infections he was suffering from at the time had alot to do with his reactions.

OMG, that poor boy. And he would get the blame for any biting and other reactions to his pain. Thank goodness he found you.
