The RSPCA's Perth shelter is in crisis, overwhelmed by an influx of seized animals and unable to move them on because of unresolved court cases.

The charity warned in February that it was at breaking point after an unprecedented number of neglected and mistreated animals were brought in.

More than 350 dogs, cats, birds, rabbits and livestock are currently housed at the Malaga site, which has room for only about 200 animals.

Some 300 animals were rescued from just three properties between late 2012 and early this year, including 132 taken from one suburban property in December.

AdvertisementCaring for the extra arrivals has cost the RSPCA about $175,000.

The RSPCA said rehoming animals was often held up by legal processes and people challenging their convictions under the Animal Welfare Act 2002.

But it uses foster carers and other programs to ensure the animals are as comfortable as possible until the cases are resolved in court, RSPCA WA chief executive David van Ooran said.

The RSPCA has been unable to take any cats for months because that part of the shelter is particularly overstretched.

"We're in a very busy holding pattern," Mr van Ooran said.

"The animals seized by RSPCA inspectors remain in the care of the RSPCA until court cases can be resolved.

"Once the court case has concluded, we are then able to put the animals through our rehoming process which involves micro-chipping, desexing and behavioural assessment to ensure the animals go to the right homes."

Mr van Ooran said the RSPCA was grateful to local legal firms that had saved it hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in fees by working on the cases pro bono.

He also urged the public to donate clean blankets and towels to help keep the animals warm during the colder months.

The RSPCA's biggest fundraising event of the year, the Million Paws Walk, will be held on May 19 across the country.

Perhaps they need to have a think about how they handle things and go after whats best for the animals rather than going after convictions.

Surely they can work with the owners sometimes before it gets to seizing them to hep find new homes for them - you know give the owners a chance to fix it and helping to clean the place up before it gets to seizing and court.

They seem to do that all the time on their TV show. Your dog is one big matted mess. Here have it back.

But I find it ironic that they're overcrowded by 150 and normally that would entail a visit from the RSPCA. Who investigates the investigators?

This is such a load of crap.

If they are overflowing then maybe they should explain why the total animals listed on the RSPCA's 'adopt a pet' website for ALL WA shelters is:

Dog: 4

Cat: 3

Horse: 1

Goats & Sheep: 10

Either they are lying, or they are not bothering to do even the basics to get the animals in their care adopted. I understand that some are unable to be put up for adoption due to the court cases but the numbers above that ARE up for adoption are just abysmal.

I believe that the AWL have the same policing powers as the RSPCA... maybe someone should report this shelter? *grin*

How convenient that this happens just before the Million Paws Walk. I will be in Perth in May for work- might have to stop by at my old workplace.. We truly used to have a great team- 10 years ago RSPCA WA was a good shelter.

BINGO, plus it's not just one state whinging, the cynic in me believes they are making up bull dust, to try & get more participation & funds, for their corrupt organisation.

The R$PCA doesn't think people are that smart, and if they tell the same lie over and over...some people will believe it. :D How many times have we heard the R$PCA bellyache that we have no money and have to close one of our shelters...but it never happens because they've got millions and millions. :mad :mad :mad
