sheena
My 5 yo BC girl has started favouring her front left foot when she gets up from rest. After a couple of minutes she seems fine & back to her normal self & it's not until she rests again that she holds it up or wont put any weight on it. I have had her to a vet, not my vet, as he was the only one I could get to see. He gave her a thorough investigation. Too thorough for my liking & he really pushed her buttons till she would snap at him I was thinking that it might be either a sprain, or a grass seed worked its way into her foot, infected nail or arthritis. All he could conclude was that one toe was a little more pinker than the others & when he squeezed it very hard she snapped at him (well so would I). He has her on AB & AI for a week then if she is no better to get an xray done of her foot. To take an xray of her foot does she have to have a GA & if that shows up nothing how do they conclude that it is arthritis....do they take a blood test We have had to leave her for a week with a neighbour (with full instructions), but when I get home, if she is no better, I will take her to my normal vet & hope that he doesn't put her through hell again. Sometimes, I feel, the manipulation they do to find out where the pain is, does more harm than good....I know it's the only way to find the pain, but I think they sometimes go a little overboard. JulesP
At least she reacted! None of my border collies have which makes it very hard to work out what is wrong. One of them didn't even react to a broken leg and dislocating patella! You should be able to xray a foot without a GA. I know you can see arthritis on a horse xray so assume you can on a dogs. So that's good to know. I am assuming that an xray would also show up if she has a grass seed working it's way up her leg. I have been picking a few of that type off her lately. I just don't want her guessing that it is arthritis & treating it as such when it is something different.
*kirty*
X rays can show up arthritis - if the cartilage has worn down, the bones will look closer together indicating arthritis. ETA: if she is well behaved they should be able to x ray without a GA. My cat didn't even need one for his chest x ray. :) Edited April 24, 2013 by *kirty*
