Recommended Posts

A few of you might remember the videos I made a while ago (like 2 years? :p)

I wanted to just make some really basic videos that anyone could use :)!

Plus Riddick is super cute <3

Edit: Adding this on so I don't make a new post and spam everyone with my silly videos :o ,I have another video here. How to train Stay

Third video on how to train a dog to spin is on the second page :)!

I love the careful look at the bag of treats left on the ground right at the end of the video "Hmmm, can I get them without being caught"?

Good video. Thanks for sharing

Chester is working on this where I say "Stick em up!" and he does a beg with raised paws, then "Bang!" and he flops to the ground with a thud.

I enjoyed your video. I liked the background music too. It was fun and upbeat and easy to understand.

Riddick is such a cutie and is so happy doing tricks!!

Kirah's my rigor mortis playing dead dog -- she 'dies' with all four legs stuck up in the air all stiff like a cockroach

Zeus is a true actor -- he takes so long to die, it's like watching a death scene from a Shakespearean tragedy!

This is exactly what my greyhound would do, but then he'd eventually flop over and just lay there. It was actually better than the sudden death, much more drama.

loved it and thanks to you lovemesideways, it gave me incentive to teach Scout to play dead. So last night taught him the basics and tonight he was doing it well enough to get a vid

Thank you again

I have a question regarding the Stay training. Some training schools I've been to have told me not to use the word stay ie if a dog is told to sit, it's to stay sitting until released. They use the same method with drop/down, stand etc. The dogs are expected to stay in the position regardless of the command, until released.

What's your opinion on this method and does it really matter if people say 'stay' or not?

They are all only words (sounds) to the dog, the advantage of teaching the dog to remain in sit, etc without stay word means that eventually you don't need to say anything, they stay there until released, that's the theory anyway!! Too often the stay command becomes a threat to the dog, too often they get anxious and break instead of being cool about it all

Good question!

I don't personally think it matters that much, one way or the other. You could do my entire training program without the word stay, and it will reach the same outcome 100%! But, the average owner wants a word to say, and it can also be very useful for your dog to know what the word stay means so you can apply it to other commands.

A good is example is when I'm doing heelwork with my GSD Roscoe, he has to be told stay when I'm going to walk off and I don't want him heeling alongside. Yet during the average day, I don't bother using the word because a position is meant to be stayed in until released anyway. So, I think its more useful than not. Hope that makes sense :o

Lol. Thats great. A slow elegant Laurence Olivier death. I dont think he would get cast on something like Django Unchained though.

You inspired me to teach Booker to play dead! He has picked it up pretty quickly... Might try and get a video :)

What will your next one be? :)

 I would love to see a video!

not sure about my next video, any ideas :D? Spin is a nice simple trick, high five + high ten as well, so they're on my list :)
