Rascalmyshadow
Does anyone else that rescues or fosters notice if you have more of one gender come through. Over the years I have done lots of private rescue and I think around 80% has been male dogs. I have been wondering why. Do people buy them thinking they wont be as expensive because they can leave them entire and not have to worry about pregnancy., are there more male dogs around, do they tend to have behaviours that are harder to manage than females or are people to lazy to housetrain them so they pee on everything. Any thoughts, ideas.
Burkes
ARF rehomed 163 dogs in 2012. 85 were make and 78 were female - pretty even.
tdierikx
I'd say it was pretty even in my experience too... T.
Her Majesty Dogmad
There appears to be more males in rescue - if you go on Petrescue you'll see that. I find that many people generally believe the following - which I usually can dispel quite easily on all counts: 1. Female dogs are cleaner 2. Female dogs are more loving and loyal 3. Females are better behaved It really annoys me because it is absolutely wrong. In my experience I've found that males are much easier generally however their piddling can be annoying but they are actually easier to housetrain ... tdierikx
I've found that female puppies are faster to toilet train than the boy puppies... both tend to work out that pooping outside is preferred, but peeing outside comes earlier for the girl puppies. Maybe like in humans, the boys have smaller bladder sizes? Maybe it's different for adult dogs... ?? When people ask us about which sex is "better" (when looking at puppies), we tend to advise that with pups, either is fine, as it's more about how their owner brings them up... *grin* T. chuckandsteve
I have had far more males. My mother for one always has female pets and its because all their naughty bits are hidden while male dogs expose themselves so to speak. I actually wonder if this is true of more people but saying that females are cleaner is a nicer way to put it.
Raelene
When I first started rescue there was definitely a trend of undesexed males being most common. Over the years it has evened up and whilst still generally undesexed there are a lot more desexed than there used to be. Think we are biased towards girls with our own 5 dogs all being girls. I don't believe one is "better" than the other though.

My aunt is the same, she has categorically stated that he will NEVER own a male dog because their bits are out and she likes patting her girls stomach.
