Rosetta
I notice someone on Gumtree giving away their Pug if someone can spring it from the Pound (Brisbane) - cost is $170. Is this the average cost of reclaiming a dog from the pound? It would be quite a lot for some people to raise.
Staffyluv
It varies depending on how long the dog has been in there. In some pounds, it also depends on how many times an animal has been impounded. Our stafford many years ago, Louis, managed to escape 3 times in one week and the local pounds charged us $90 the third time - where as it had been much less before that. A bit more incentive to fix the fence properly so he didn't escape again. Some pounds will also insist on microchipping before the dog leaves as well. If it isn't the owner springing the dog, then the pound will sell the animal but the price usually includes a desexing coupon (if the animal isn't already desexed). Rosetta
Thanks Staffyluv - was just curious - there were no details in the ad as to how long he had been there. Just thought it was sad - I hope the pound does rehome him.
tdierikx
Most of the pounds I frequent will charge per day of stay... T.
Dame Aussie
Depends on all kinds of things, whether dog is registered or not, how many days it's been there, whether it's desexed or not, what council area you fall into etc.
melinda10786
When I was at the pound the other day, it's about $50 for the night plus a council rego if they aren't current with their council rego (more if its not de-sexed). If its a repeat offender, the cost is more, and it increases depending on the number of days it has been impounded for.
chuckandsteve
Cost me 400 once the council charged for dog at large for a foster that escaped her new home. I was there within an hour to get the dog. Edited April 13, 2013 by chuckandsteve

In NSW the dog must be microchipped and registered before being released, which is enforced under the Companion Animals Act, unless it is released under a clause exemption. The exemption allows approved orgs and rescues to take the dog unregistered but it still must be chipped. Edited April 13, 2013 by ~Anne~
redangel
Its just not the per day, in my area I am led to believe it is an initial fee plus per day. Factor in the fine for a dog at large and a family could face some 280.00, more if dog was wondering at night or not wearing a collar..and again more if unregistered as well.... My elderly grandfather once let my old dobe out (he left gate ajar as he did some gardening to surprise me...she was picked up by a council worker working on a strip 2 doors down, I called the ranger...I was there as the car pulled into the pound with her inside.....cost me $180.00 dog at large (day) a day of care at pound/release fee ($80.00)she didnt have a collar but was reg'd & chipped($60.00)and because she was a breed defined under the act ($200)and a further $200 for the fact we lived within 200m of a school. Yep, I could have got some landscaping done for that. Imagine if she wasnt registered!!!! This was about ten years back....I often wonder how much it would cost now. I understand fees, but sometimes I think it is really necessary to be so hefty?
chuckandsteve
Well looks like you dont want to lose a dog in Victoria do you. It actually took me nearly a week to get the dog out of the pound because she was chipped to me but on trial somewhere else. The pound found it very annoying that I went down everyday to check on her and see if they would release her yet. I believe they were actually wanting to declare her a pitbull but she had been released from a Victorian pound a month earlier and I had all the release paperwork for them, along with microchip, rego, vaccs, desex. The reason one of the kennel hands told me they didnt like her was she looked them in the eyes. Gotta love LDH temp testing.

That paperwork wouldn't have stopped them declaring her - the only thing that will protect the dog is a pedigree certificate stating the dog is an Amstaff or a purpose written certificate from a vet staying that the dog is an Amstaff (which most vets won't do). You're very lucky especially considering it was LDH.

Just being jerks really, they claimed there was a dispute over ownership which there wasnt we were both there wanting her released to me. But they needed a stat dec from police and then the ranger had to be there but apparently they have a dog attack every 2 hours in that council so she wouldnt see us. Then she had to inspect the property the dog came from. It was all made up stuff but they had the dog and i didnt so had to go with it. Was insane

Maddy
In the Launceston city council area, it's the base fines (dog at large, no collar, no rego tags, etc) and then a daily fee. For many people on lower incomes, this prices them out of reclaiming their dog, unfortunately. The council doesn't seem interested in working with owners to help address the problems- the dog escapes, it gets impounded, the owner can't afford release fees, the council kill the dog, the owner gets a new puppy, rinse, repeat. In Launceston, unidentified dogs get three days before ownership is transferred to the RSPCA (where less than half will make it out alive). You'd think, if councils were serious about dog management that they'd be doing more to prevent the problem of straying dogs, rather than just collecting the unfairly high fines once it happens. The dog jumped through a fly wire screen, while the owner was having a nap in the next room. Just an unforeseeable event, it happens
