Nushie
So a few days ago, Jager was accidentally fed some meat that was a little past it. I was keeping it in the fridge so that i could throw it in the bin on collection day, but my boyfriend wasn't aware and gave it to him. Anyways, he got the runs for a day and that cleared up by Sunday but he has had the most awful, room clearing wind ever since. He hasn't been given anything other than his normal dry food since in the hopes that it would clear up on its own. I was wondering if there was something that i might be able to give him to settle his tummy?? I was going to give him Yoghurt but i didnt want to just give him random things that might make him worse, willing to try things if people to suggest them though. Thanks :)
persephone
some natural yoghurt , yes :) or a probiotic ..to help increase the 'good' bacteria in his gut , and get rid of the bad . Depending on what normal' food is ..you may need to decrease grain etc for a while to give the bacteria less on which to feed ..?
Dame Aussie
I'd probably feed him some boiled chicken and rice for a few days, and some good yoghurt to help with any bacteria.

So hopefully that is alright.
Nushie
I figured yoghurt would be the way to go but didn't to risk giving him the runs again unless it was suggested. I will pick some up tomorrow for him. How much should I give him? He is about 8-9kgs, so a couple of tea spoons with each meal?? BlackJaq
When my dog accidentally got a hold of some cabbage soup and had the runs for three days (she did receive vet treatment and went in for fluids over night) I fed her a fair bit of natural yoghurt with psyllium husk for fibre in it to help bulk up her poo and help empty the anal glands. It also eventually helped with the diarrhoea....
moosmum
Bush remedy is charcoal, crushed up. Absorbs the gasses and toxins. Not suitable if theres constipation or if hes on oral meds.If hes the Pug in your avatar,a tiny bit should do the trick (think vitamin C tablet size for human adult,so maybe 1/8th that size?) No for long term use as it will absorb nutrients and good stuff too. Great hangover remedy :D Edited March 27, 2013 by moosmum
Boronia
Yep, charcoal is great, I use it for tummy upsets. For the Westies I give 1/2 tablet morning and night. You can buy charcoal tablets at chemists for about $8--$12. Westie tummy-troubles are usually caused by the concerted efforts of three dogs in removing the little sliding doors on the compost bin and eating the goodies inside. jerojath
Charcoal Tablets are great, but only 'treat' the symptoms. I agree with the yoghurt idea. A good quality natural yoghurt contains beneficial bacteria which will help combat the excessive culture of 'bad' bacteria. It should only take a couple of days to clear up. I have used Yakult in the past too, with great affect.
Nushie
Thanks all. I made some yoghurt up last week and within a day he was much better. I have continued to give it to him (I had made 1L so figured it would use it all) and there has been nothing even remotely smelly since. Not even the odd one that attacks after dinner :) I think this is going to have to be a regular thing!
mita
Another vote for plain yoghurt. His tummy healthy 'flora' needed replacing. So I'm not surprised you saw a difference in a short time. Edited April 3, 2013 by mita
BlackJaq
Yea, no reason not to feed it on a regular basis, I have also noticed a reduction in smelly farts lol
