Legal Age To Sell Puppies In Sa?

I thought it was 8 weeks Aus wide, could be wrong though? Wishful thinking probably

I always thought it was 8 weeks ? when my parents were registered breeders when i was a very young girl, they never let their puppies go to their new homes before 8 weeks, I think they were a bit older from memory.. (I asked my Mum when I saw her today, she said they didn't go to their new homes until they were are least 9 weeks old)

BYB's around here often let them go at around 6 weeks

The ANKC Code of Ethics that prohibits rehoming pups before 8 weeks only applies to ANKC registered breeders.

As far as I am aware there is no law that regulates how young a pup can be sold.

Only thing I could find in relation to age of puppies is for the pet trade...

Under the Animal Welfare CoP for animals in the pet trade [take it pet shops] it states..

2 3 . AGE OF ANIMALS

(a)

Unweaned animals must not be sold and may only be accepted by pet shops for subsequent sale where adequate facilities and expertise exist for their artificial feeding and care.

(b)

Puppies and kittens must not be sold until they have reached the age of 7 weeks.

As far as I am aware there is no law that regulates how young a pup can be sold.

It is a state by state thing. In NSW it comes under Section 9 of the Animal Welfare Code of Practice for Breeding Dogs and Cats

In the DogSA journal they put in every now and again the code of ethics we in SA must abide by if we are members of DogSA,the age is eight weeks, but since mandatory microchipping came in for us, we have to have puppies microchipped before registering them, an ANKC rule,so my babies, when I have some, are done at nine weeks and I let them go at 10 weeks.

Its 8 weeks for sale by pet shop or breeder.

8 weeks for kittens in pet shops but 12 weeks for registered breeders (GCCSA or FASA)

Private/byb's can sell at any age I think they are unregulated at present.
