Sue & Waldo
A friend of mine had it put down and within 10 days it reeked. She is in the process of getting legal advice to get a refund. The urine just pooled onto the rubber backing. I would keep well away from it! Makes me sick to think of it. They had rolls and rolls of it when I was at Bunnings today. Should be outlawed - LOL. Sorry KHM :). No worries - ours has been great but I would not have gone with the Bunnings one - definitely proffesional job needed. Her's was put down professionally and it cost her big time. It was put on sand and supposed to drain. You could smell it from the back door. It was advertised as pet friendly. Maybe it was the rubber backing that was the problem. littleduck
My Husband & I have a business selling and installing Artificial Grass! I would suggest that in a yard that size it might not be appropriate for an area where the dog has no choice but to wee and poo on it, as it does get smelly. You are able to scoop the solids and hose, but there isn't really a choice for the dog to go anywhere else. We have had issues ( with another company) selling artificial grass to a person with dogs, and my husband had to rip it up and replace it.... he said the smell was horrific! Loving my Oldies
Here it is - http://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-vic-croydon-113218703 That looks really lovely - great house too. (Quite off topic, but the photographer should be up for false advertising as it makes some of the rooms look huge, but the layout diagram says otherwise ) The best mulch I have found is Eucy mulch. The eucalyptus smell is lovely when first laid, but naturally, that seeps out of it after a while when exposed to sun and rain. Weeds do come through, but they are very easily picked out. Much easier than digging out of lawn and gardens which aren't mulched. I love the look of gravel paths (despite problems outlined in another topic ) and raking is a lovely relaxing pasttime. Very zen :D :D
Adnil444
Hi, I had a small section of my yard laid with top-of-the-range, guaranteed to "never be pulled/dug up" artificial lawn. It was great for 6 months, then one day, I came home to find it has been ripped up in parts. The warranty meant the company came back and repaired it, which they did and very quickly. Then a day or two later, the same thing, but in a different area. Again they came back and repaired it. Then the next day it was again ripped up - this time they said they would have to charge me for any more repairs. They also changed their advertising material and took out the section about it being guaranteed to never be pulled/dug up. It cost me $2600 for a small section and it is still there in parts - looking awful now.
YOLO
Funny story related to artificial grass. At one minesite I worked we refurbished the outdoor “indoor cricket” nets with new artificial turf and new netting. Within days the rabbits had eaten holes in the netting to get to the artificial turf. I guess the grass really WAS greener…
RallyValley
Yeah I think after all the feedback from here I am going to try real lawn - just a very hardy variety! :)
Vehs
My parents have fake lawn, but the D only visits very occasionally and usually does his business on walks. It does get quiet warm, but D also loves scratching and rubbing himself on it. I have a client with a lab that has just put down fake lawn - I think the dog mostly does his #2s around the side of the house on gravel but not sure about his wees... I'll have to ask if they have noticed a smell. I haven't.
Loving my Oldies
I've just remembered: SASH, the Small Animal Specialist Hospital at North Ryde laid artificial turf as a place for them to take the hospitalised dogs for walks, wees and poos. The stench is absolutely unbelievable and how anyone could have authorised this is beyond my comprehension. Naturally is is cleaned and hosed down, but apart from its total unsuitability for such a high dog use, I would have thought it would be a huge breeding ground for infections and disease. The last time I went there, I had to absolutely steel myself to walk past it.
Dante
I was considering laying artificial turf in my backyard a few years ago. So glad I didn't. I got a landscaper in and asked him to recommend a lawn that was hardy enough to withstand the dogs (mind you I only have chihuahua's). He recommended Sir Walter Buffalo and I have been very happy with it. It self repairs very quickly (as they occasionally dig at it), is great in summer as it keeps the backyard cooler and after being weed and pood on constantly it does not develop brown patches. BlackJaq
If you are going to look into real lawn I would look at how much lawn grid will cost you. It is only a small area and it will greatly reduce the amount of wear your turf is experiencing. Hang on, I will find a link for ETA: http://www.boddingtons.com.au/grass-reinforcement/grass-parking-paver.htm http://www.porous-paving.com.au/ Edited March 13, 2013 by BlackJaq
