ninahartland
Thought I would update on this beautiful girl, she was picked up as a stray along with masiff boy (obviously dad ) early in Jan. He has since gone to a new home in Yass We got this girl out a few weeks ago and has just been waiting to give birth getting fatter and fatter at Rhonda's (her laundry has been a birthing suite a few times lol ). She's now called Honey and has an adopter waiting for her too when she's weaned the pups She had 12 pups and 1 stillborn. If any other rescues can share the workload of taking some pups in a few weeks please let me know :D Pound pic dad
Her Majesty Dogmad
This will be seen as controversial perhaps but wouldn't it have been better to get her desexed right away and halt the pregnancy in very early days?

tdierikx
We'd be happy to take on some of the pups once they are old enough to leave mum... how do you envision it to work? Would you be signing the pups over to another rescue, or are you only looking for someone to foster them for your rescue? I have the resources to foster entire litters here... *grin* T. She didnt have definate rescue early on and we only took her in the later stages as otherwise she would have been pts as no one else committed to help her. Would have desexed her earlier yes for sure but not once she was so far along....cant do it Im sorry but thats just me We'd be happy to take on some of the pups once they are old enough to leave mum... how do you envision it to work? tdierikx
I have a permanent fixture puppy pen/run with a huge shed and plenty of room for puppies to play. I also have the granny flat set up so that pups can be contained safely there if the weather is really crap outside. I work close to home, so am not home too late to get the pups playing with me and/or my other dogs for social time - and puppies get couch cuddles in front of the TV too... *grin* Just let me know when/if pups are coming, and where the transporter prefers to meet up - and how many babies I need to bring crates for - and I'll be there with bells on! Alternately, they could be dropped off at our shelter in Bringelly if that is viable for the people doing transport. Now I'm getting excited... I've been fosterless for a while and am missing out on my puppy breath fix. T.

Exactly Agree also, but now they have arrived would they not be better to be kept together with mum to learn important puppy lessons?? tdierikx
You'll probably find that these little ones will be weaned by their mum fairly early in the piece - of all the large breed litters we've had born in rescue, I can only remember one bitch who was still actively wanting to feed her pups on a regular basis after 4 weeks... and with a litter of 12, I'm seeing this girl possibly being "over it" around the same timeframe. Pups that come to my place have surrogate mother figures in my older 2 dogs... who are only too happy to nurture them as if they were their own pups and teach them correct behaviours and how to get along. I've fostered pups as young as 4 weeks old here - not by choice, but with the right exposures to the right stimuli, they've all turned out to be lovely well-adjusted little canine citizens. T. tdierikx
You know that you are now obliged to put up regular photos of these pups showing us their progress? *grin* How are they all going so far... and how is mum dog coping? T.
BlackJaq
In case anybody wants to help out another BH poundie who is possibly pregnant, please visit the BH thread. There is another large breed girl there who is assumed to be in the very early stages of pregnancy and will need a rescue to put their name on her and have her spayed before the pregnancy progresses any further. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Please, please, please leave them with Mum until they're 8 weeks old!!! OMG I can't believe you're even considering removing them from their mum that early. There is a very, very good reason why reputable breeders aren't allowed to rehome pups until they're 8 weeks old and a lot of it has to do with them being with their mum for as long as possible. Its not got anything to do with feeding etc and everything to do with socialisation. Whilst I agree that she should have been desexed a LONG time ago she wasn't but for Christ's sake please give these babies the best chance possible by leaving them with their mum until the are at least 7 weeks old. I can't believe that, when they can stay with their mum until they're 8 weeks old, you would even consider moving them.
Trisven13
Just so angry - DON'T RESCUE A PREGNANT BITCH UNLESS YOU CAN CARE FOR HER AND THE PUPS UNTIL THEY'RE 8 WEEKS OLD. :mad

Alyosha
I have late desexed pregnant rescue bitches, and the risk is far less than letting them whelp and raise youngsters. I cannot see why this is allowed to happen - high risk to the bitch and pups, and flying in the face of what rescue is supposed to be about. Yes it's not pleasant, but that's rescue. If people want to breed dogs they should do so outside of a rescue umbrella. Breeders releasing pups less than 8 weeks old get crucified around here - but this time it's ok??
Cosmolo
Please don't split the pups up before 8 weeks of age. Google "Incomplete socialisation"- this is crucial for all pups but even more so for pups of a cross breed like these guys.
