scrappynsuzie
Hi all, I haven't bred a litter for 18 months and decided to bred my bitch this season. Rang the vet today to organise a prog test and was told Can't do it for two weeks, need to order in the test. And the cost is $380. I was gob smacked. Last litter it was $80 and a turn around of 3 days. Is $380 the going price? cheers
Waggy
Sounds very pricey. I just went through this with my bitch & prog test was about $59 per test. Got results the same day. Maybe you need to try another vet that specialises in this more for better price and service. Edited March 1, 2013 by Toto
espinay2
I get my prog test done at my local vet in the morning and results are back from the lab the same afternoon. Longest I have had to wait is till next morning (first thing - they called me at 8am) when the local machine was broken and it had to go to Sydney. I think I pay about $80 per test or a little less. NO WAY would I be accepting what they are telling you (I wouldn't even accept a 3 day turn around...). Do they really understand the importance of timing for a prog test?? As for the price... poocow
OMG no way would I be happy with that price or the turn around time I pay $50 per test and 1-2 hours wait.
Asalei
My vet is $47.20 and a 2 hour turn around. I'd be finding another vet!
winpara
Are you sure the receptionist knew what test you were after? Can't see them needing to "order" it is all. Cost here (Perth) is generally around the $40 mark. Blood drawn in the morning and results that afternoon. Testing is done by a human pathology lab and not in house. Tralee
I would need to look it up but definately not over $80. I've prog tested twice in last few years and presently think it is a waste of money.
Bullbreedlover
I would need to look it up but definately not over $80. I've prog tested twice in last few years and presently think it is a waste of money. Some people prog test others dont. Why do you think it is a waste of money. Have you prog tested your bitches with successful preganancy resulting? What other methods do you use. ie colour change, smear tests. I have delved into smear tests but not in great depth. Am going to have to grab a microscope because I would like to learn more. Have prog tested a bitch which was not moving very much at all in the results. Decided to AI at day 21 regardless of what the test was going to come back as and she had 8 puppies. Next day after AI she was totally out of her season. Have only missed once with one of our Bulldogs(which we did prog test but never got her pregnant) and we didnt prog test any others but relyed on colour change and flagging and never missed. I dont solely rely on a prog test though. Prog tests I have been quoted have ranged from $45.00 to $61.00 Edited March 1, 2013 by Bullbreedlover
Sayly
$45 and results back in a few hours here.
scrappynsuzie
thanks everyone for your reply. I pretty much knew it was way too expensive. Might have to go in and ask the Vet what the problem is now.. Small vet surgery in the country. Have made other arrangements. Happy & safe breeding to you all
Gemelo
$72.60 at my vet, test in the morning and results back early afternoon.
benshiva
$50 and result in 90 minutes. I'd be very concerned about a 3 day turnaround for results as well. A bitch can spike very quickly and could be easily missed.

alpha bet
Have been using the prog test for last 4 litters - certainly makes things easier to know when best to arrange mating - especially when stud dog is not at your doorstep and some bitches can have short seasons. We usually do 2-3 tests at about $40 each, results done in under 2 hours at Craigieburn - Do these tests because I get the optimum time and when you pay $1200-1500 for stud fee, I want the best chance so figure spending $120 on testing is good value in the long run. Does sound like your clinic is quoting on the wrong test and you should find one that is quicker and perhaps even does their own.
