arjay
Can you still get these in Australia? If so where? Just never heard about the brand till now.
piper
I believe they stopped selling to Australia after it was found their food had to go through irradiation on import. This caused a massive problem in cats a few years ago as it destroys something in the food that is critical to a cat's health.
Danois
That is correct. It is no longer sold here as the cat food was poisoning our cats - causing lesions on the spinal cord from memory and there was a risk that even if they only imported the dog food, cats could still eat it incidentally. Looks like a all-star-rating dog food. http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/?s=+Orijen http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/showcat.php?cat=all&stype=1&si=Orijen Wish there's a place in Aust that we could try some of them out. What it did to my cat and a couple of hundred others was truly horrific. I'm just extremely grateful mine was one of the few to repair and recover as much as she did. If it's not irradiated, there's a huge risk to Australia's fishing industry (and other agricultural industries).

Did you actually read the other posts? This food caused hundreds of cats to be put down in Australia. Cats that were healthy one day couldn't walk the next. The impacts on dogs was never assessed. Why on earth would you want to try this food out on your dog when it is irradiated at levels that actually kill the nutrients? I didn't know that. http://www.wherearethepetfoodchampions.com I guess the product itself is still good if the extra heating/irradiation process did not occur. I mean, how else it gets top star rating and pet food of the year award in overseas. Anyway, this brand has such a bad name here in Australia, I'm sure no supplier is going to import again. The food itself was wonderful. The product was irradiated at unusually high levels and no warnings or transparency of any kind provided by the importer. Because the food itself is cooked at such a low heat, it had to be irradiated under Aqis regulations of the day. Part of the aftermath of the tragic results to many cats saw a change in the laws surrounding importation of cat and dog food (and treats). Cat food is never irradiated - it is either allowed to be imported or refused. Dog food can be imported and irradiated (as can dog treats such as Wanpy and a lot of rawhide types) but must by law carry a sticker stating that the product is unsuitable for cats. If you see that sticker, you know the product is irradiated. Yes, it is a pity Orijen is not a viable product for Australia, but no, it is not a pity that Aqis take these things so seriously. At least we do enjoy an increasing variety of quality food options. Sags Edited February 26, 2013 by Sagittarian
Katdogs
http://www.wherearethepetfoodchampions.com Quick update Rocky's still at about the 90% mark. She's not very active and certainly doesn't climb onto roofs (which is a good thing). We don't know what the long term implications will be, but her life these days is good. It was a really awful Christmas in 2008 though.
Danois
It was a great dog food. It worked for my ill dog where other foods were failing too. But yes - I watched my cat (who I was feeding the cat version to) lose control in his back end. He made a full recovery at the time - these days I have noticed weakness in his rear but who knows if that is age or residual effect. In hindsight, my dog dying saved my cat as I stopped ordering the food together online a couple of months before the recall. I'm pleased Rocky has improved too.
