Price Of Puppies

Thanks guys - I was a bit worried about posting as I have read some quite nasty responses in other threads :-/ a lot of people on here obviously have lots of experience and I think they sometimes forget that everyone has to start somewhere :-)

I think hunter is definitely a "possum" ... I was starting to think he might be otherwise inclined haha ... Thats a good point about finding out early!

I'm personally leaning towards speying her rather than injections... We were already thinking that it would be a bad idea to mate them due to the size difference anyway.

I know there are lots of staffies around - I guess I'm like everyone else in thinking that mine are the best haha we have always adopted dogs from the pound in the past but we really wanted pups that would grow up with us, and staffies are our favorite breed <3

This was said after the decision had been made to abort the accidental pregnancy, and probably spay.

Perhaps I should have said... " *sheepish face* I guess I'm like everyone else in thinking that mine are the best haha" .... I was actually admitting that I was like a lot of uninformed / inexperience owners who state this as one of the main reasons they want a litter from their dogs. This idea had been corrected after reading a lot of information on the forum and getting advice from others.

....

As soon as someone who is not an experienced, registered breeder mentions anything about having puts they seem to be catergorised as the average bogan who wants puppies to pay for beer money, feeds their dogs chum and leaves them on a chain in the backyard day in and out. My dogs get the best food possible, are fully insured and are taken to the vet at the drop of a hat if anything seem off. Any puppies would receive the same care. I also believe you can have your own details recorded on the microchip along with the new owners so you can be notifed if they ever get into trouble - at which point of course we would step in and take them back. I know the general attitude on this forum is that only registered breeders can be ethical but I personally don't subscribe to that idea.

This is beside the point however as it had already been determined earlier in the thread that it would be less risky to abort, and this is what we have decided to do. We are now just deciding whether to give the injection or spey.

...

At least quote the full statement - I was answering someone's question about whether I would meet all the costs and ensure puppies were all vaccinated, microchipped etc etc If I did have the litter. Just because I'm not registered doesn't mean I don't give a rats a*s about the health and safety of any pups I was responsible for.

Again, this was a hypothetical question anyway as we were not intending on having the litter.

No, (luckily?) you were going to wait until she was 2 1/2 before mating them.

Lasariena has dealt with her fair share of lectures now me thinks. Everyone here should be grateful, your wish was granted, her bitch is desexed and any pups were aborted. She has learnt her lesson. The forum has changed someone's mind who could have potentially turned into another BYB, but now she will consider becoming registered IF she decides down the track that she still wants to breed. This is a WIN for the forum and what we stand for! So how about some congratulations to Lasariena instead of further hassling?

I'll say it myself anyway, well done Lasariena and I hope you stick around here as it's a great place full of great information :)

Lasareina was making the point that just because you own a byb dog, doesn't mean you are a bad owner.

I think most people would agree with that.

I know quite a few people with pet shop dogs or byb dogs etc. and their dogs are really well looked after, valued members of their household. They look after their dogs in the way that any ethical dog breeder would want a puppy of theirs to be looked after.

That is true - I own a pound mutt and consider myself a very good owner.

I do everything I can for my boy - we go to obedience training, he is walked, played with, socialised, fed good quality food and vetted when he needs it.

My foster dogs get exactly the same as my boy when they are here..

However, we see so many dogs in pounds and I would hazard a guess and say that over 90% of dogs in pounds are BYB 'purebreds' and cross breeds.

So from that alone - one could assume that those buying BYB dogs do in fact not care for them as much as those buying registered purebred dogs.

YES YES AND YES........

Some of the best agility dogs I see (including one of mine) are BYB/Pet shop dogs that owners got as their first dog. Once in the dog world not too many people I know opt for a second from those sources. Some rescue, but many seem to prefer the more predictable temperament and generally superior structure that comes with a dog from a known background.

My pet shop girl lives alongside my two pedigree dogs and gets no better or worse treatment than they do.

Well at least you know it will only get better from here.

I guess people people that are on here are passionate about what they do and why, and also particularly if they have been around a while get a little bit over seeing oh but my babies are so gorgoeus everyone needs one etc etc. So yeh you have to forgive people if they seem over zealous.

I hope your girl is feeling okay today.

I am very passionate about what I do but I have learnt to bide my time and give a considered response and find that tends to not get peoples backs up - well not all the time. Sometimes I have no patience and my response is a little less toned done :) We all have our days :)

I dunno, there are people who are passionate about what they do, sure - but there are also some vultures who like to dig in and nitpick, for far longer than is necessary. (I'm not talking about you, OSoSwift, though!)

wow just read the entire thread, was a great incite for me as someone un-experianced with breeding and although some conversations did venture into arguments I must say I'm happy i spent the time, I know the opening post has probably been lost in the journey this thread has taken but I just wanted to say thanks to MonElite for posting this for us and I hope that all the pups found a loving and caring home

I agree. Sometimes the comments can read as very snarky, though the bulk of people are well meaning. Good on you Lasareina for sticking around.

Thanks guys it's nice to see some friendly people - I was very close to giving up and finding a more welcoming forum lol.

I understand people are passionate, and I have said before that I have nothing but respect for people who are more knowledgeable than myself, but some people seem to like to intimidate others.

I was getting to the point where I was asking myself, what do I have to do to please these people who are so determined to see me and everything I do or say in the most negative light possible?

Sorry I got the thread off topic a bit :o - I checked out the photos of the adorable puppies before i got embroiled in trying to explain myself and they were soo cute. I loved how there was an even number of the black and the tans... Bet they were a handful as they got bigger!

You might find a more welcoming one. I'm not sure you'd find a more informed one.

I don't visit other fora much these days but I do recall visiting a few, reading advice and shaking my head. :(
