piper Posted February 24, 2013 Share Posted February 24, 2013 I just recently had a litter of 2 and the main thing people warned me of was not to let her go overdue at all and to monitor closely as sometimes with only 1 or 2 they do not go into labour. If you can get your girl to settle and not lick the baby all the time she should be OK but I had one bitch that stressed the baby to such an extent that it died. Interestingly, she did go on to have some big litters and did have another singleton later in her life that survived. Christina Posted February 24, 2013 Share Posted February 24, 2013 I have had 2 singleton pup litters & 4 singleton cat litters. 1 cat was ceasarian the rest no problem. Births were normal. Personality & temperament of babies was better. They developed quicker. They got so much attention especially when mums got bored & didn't want to stay with them as much. I did tend to cart them around the house with me. They didn't like being on their own & I am soft. Guess it depends on the mum re the labour & care of but I didn't find it a big deal. I did wean them asap & they were very willing. My breed is a toy breed. I think its normal to go over a little as they don't have the other pups to jog things along & hormone levels may be lower, not sure on that. Mjosa Posted February 24, 2013 Share Posted February 24, 2013 I have had two singleton litters, well one had three babies in it but born prematurely and two had not developed to survive the outside world, the Dam of this litter, her first, was an amazing Mother, the first singleton I had was just that, his Dam did not want to know him she was so disinterested, yet with her first litter of eight an amazing Mother. I handraised this baby, but as there was only one, speaking of both now, they were very well socialised. With my breed it is almost always a c section,and do temps for about three days before due date, and I work hand in hand with my vet. I would take her at about day 60 and get a prog test done as that can determine how far off she is, I will be doing this from now on less invasive than having a thermometerup their backend morning and night. Fordogs Posted March 2, 2013 Share Posted March 2, 2013 I had a single puppy litter last year ultrasound was done 3 days prior, she only had 1 mating so I knew the exact due date so when she failed to go into labour by the due date she had a caesar BUT after 24 hours the puppy was starting to fail, she had milk but when I removed the baby and gave it a bottle she was extremely hungry 2 bottles later I thought she was doing well and gave her back to mum, within a couple of hours the puppy was again failing so I ended up bottle feeding as there was something wrong with mum's milk. So my advise to you would be 1) be prepared to do a caesar if not delivered by the due date. 2) Keep a check on the puppy's weight to be sure she is doing well. 3) have bottle & fomula or goat milk ready. Kirislin Posted March 4, 2013 Share Posted March 4, 2013 I wonder if it would be possible to foster some other newborns in need, perhaps from a bitch that has a big litter, although not sure if that would give the puppy enough socialisation as the owner would probably want them back at 6 weeks if not sooner.
